writing DVDs at 2x or 4X???

What's the main diference between writing at 2x and 4x (besides the recording time)? Are there any diferences on the "quality" of the recording?

I duuno about quality but I had some DVD-Rs that certainly seemed more relaible and compatible when burnt at 1x instead of 2x although at the time i had a 104 which had hacked firmware that allowed you to record 2x on 1x discs.

The converse is also true though.

There are LOTS of 2x media that WON'T work if you burn it at 1x.

I only burn at 4x and my quality and compatability are great. I only burn on Ritek discs though and I think that is the main reason why I get consistent good burns and great compatiblity.

No point in buying a 4x burner if you can't burn at 4x.

Or if the rest of your system can't deliver however many megs a second 4x is... a lot.

Yea I have a 4X burner too.... buy wow the media is soooo expensive???

I burn with the sony DWU-14A.. I love the burner... but I'm having trouble finding firmware updates...
anyway....

Let me know a good place to buy 4X media... I found some +R at costco.. but prefer -R for movies.....

The board has a excellent review of all media types & how they rate at the speeds. Seems most are much more reliable if you don't do 4x.

Just picked up 4x Memorex DVD-R, no coasters and the few backups I made played flawlessly.

Not bad for 29.99 for a 25 spindle of 4x media

I just bought that burnere last week, what kind of media do you prefer and does it work fine with most burn software (ie CopyToDVD, Nero, CloneDVD)? Have you ripped a DVD with it, what does it rip at? Thanks!

that is a good price for 4X.. does it write on them at 4X or less.. the reason I ask.. is that memorex for me goes all over the map "as far as normal nondvd type media".. their 48x copies from only 16x to 48x?.. using powerec... powerec insures reliable copies supposely... in other words.. you can turn it off and you can get away with faster speeds, but you will have errors beyond the acceptable range.. even though it may still be readable "for now!"..

but when I use tdk, fugi, or verbatim I get 52x every time "again nondvd"

As far as dvd with the dwu-14a.. I only have experience with tdk-R and+R.. both copy everytime at 2X....

I also have used the 1X from compusa.. you get 10 for 7.99 "with the jewell cases!".. but beware some are very thin and you can see through them.. I lose about 10% with those.
But whenever I have a movie thats being stubborn and won't play back without freezing.. I just copy again with the tdk and its perfect!

As far as the other question.. I use clonedvd and dvd decryptor and dvd toolbox if I want to split them into 2 disks.

Sorry I havn't given too much attention at how fast it rips.. not a concern for me cause I have a dvd and the burner.. I can rip and burn at the same time.. I can rip about 3 dvd's to the one that I burn.. so I don't need to rip any faster?...Someone else may give you better info.
The only thing I would suggest is just remember that firmware updates are nonexistent unless you can find a hacked one with the sony oem stuff!!!

how do you test if you're burning at 4x? Using record now max...3-4GB movies take 12-14 minutes to rip...and timing it, it takes that long and no longer...as apposed to the 26-30 mins at 2x
