I hope my terminology is correct...
I have a couple of home movies that were burned to DVD that I want to add chapter stops to. What software do I need to do this? Do I have to use that same video editor that was used in the creation of this DVD?
TIA

I haven't heard of chapter stops in the dvd specification, but I'm sure there is a way to accomplish the same thing. The only way to do it would be to re-author your dvd with a dvd authoring program. Some of the lower end dvd authoring programs like Ulead DVD Movie Factory or DVDit might be able to do what you're looking for, but you would have a better chance using Scenarist (high-end program), but that is expensive and hard to learn.
check out the guides here: https://www.videohelp.com/author
And also at doom9's website: http://www.doom9.org
My suggestion to you would be to do a lot of reading about dvd authoring. -
If you made those yourself, all you need to do is do it again
with chapters. All the authoring programs will do that.
If you didn't and dont have the original files, you need to take the DVD apart
and put it together again. It's not THAT bad, but it would take 2 pages to
explain and there are guides. -
Thanks guys, I just picked up my Pinnacle Studio AV package today to transfer my 8mm movies to DVD, I'll try the software latter this week.

I am not sure what are you trying to do.... Re-author old DVDs or capture from VHS ?

Re-author sounds right.
A friend was given a DVD as a momento. The DVD has the home movie of their class reunion. It doesn't have any chapter stops so one has to fast forward through the "boring" parts. I've already ripped the DVD to my hard drive and I was hoping to run it through Pinnacle's Movie Studio 8 to hopefully add some chapter stops and then burn it back to DVD. That's re-authoring, right? -
Hmm... there might be some better way to do this with IfoEdit or maybe some software that support as input VOB files but here is what I know...
Strip from ripped files audio and video. Import them to DVD Authoring software and re-author. For authoring software search "Tools" on the left or HOW TO "Guides".
You can use Pinnacle Studio version 8 too but there are some limitations. Try to look at post that is in my signature.Pinnacle Studio 8 and DV home video editing (ver.9 already home) -
Awesome, thanks for taking the time to make the guide!
