problem with dvd backup, help with osex please

i'm having problems backing up some of my dvds, as many of you are, using dvdbackup.

judging from this forum, osex is probably the next best way to do it.

i've tried many different settings in osex ie. vobu but i end up with thousands of files!

could someone please write me a step by step instruction to back up my dvd with osex then hopefully compress using dvd2one in the usual way.

If you want to run the rip through DVD2One, you will need to set the output method of OSEx to either Folders or Disk Image. FYI: It takes OSEx a long time to make a complete rip (much longer than DVDBackup).

just tried to use 'dvd image' . when i click on the resulting .img file disc copy says - 'unable to open .img'

has this happened to you? any more ideas?

instead of double clicking to open the image, actually drag it over top of disk utility, or even better open disk utility then choose it from the open disk image function.

if that doesnt work, you could always try renaming it to .dmg and using your right click (control click) and if you are in panther open with diskimagemounter.

I ALWAYS use OSEx, but for DVD2OneX purposes, I choose 'DVD Folders' as output format (Fmt).
Then select the VIDEO_TS folder in DVD2OneX, and go for it.

By the way. It is certainly not slower.
The only problem with OSEx is, that it has no typically Mac interface.
Just read the readme once.

Caution: OSEx DVD Folder mode sometimes corrupts the video, and introduces a bunch of very visible glitches at times (not on all DVDs). I would caution very strongly against using OSEx in DVD Folder mode. DVD Image mode may take longer, but the output is perfect every time. DVDBackup is pretty reliable when it works, but fails to work on several DVDs. If you want to avoid messing up the video, your practical options are DVDBackup or OSEx in DVD Image mode.

rather, just a solution to opening a .IMG created by the app he/she used.

aarghh!

got a new problem now. one of my dvds wouldn't work with dvdbackup so i used osex. the full disc is 7.69 gigs.

i used osex using both disc image and dvd folders but the resulting video_ts is only 6.99 gigs. when i put it into dvd2onex it says 'for full diskcopy you need to copy all files from the DVD in file mode.'

any ideas anyone?

Which movie in particular is this...

aside from saying try the old dvdextractor app, if its not working with OSeX nor dvdbackup it could be such a new movie there is a new type of encryption on there..

no it's not a new movie. it's the original matrix and i've backed up reloaded no problem. it's one of those movies that has vob files with zero data on them that dvdbackup doesn't like.

Oh yes, the infamous Matrix DVD. I think everyone had a problem with it one way or another.

the 6.99gigs VIDEO_TS that is created using osex plays perfectly in the apple dvd player.

i put this VIDEO_TS through dvdbackup and was convinced that dvd2onex would take it...but no! it still says that some files are missing.

i also changed the disc image created with osex from .img to .dmg. and here is where i found the rest of the data that had gone missing(not that it matters with the apple dvd player, so why do i need it anyway?)

the missing data is: autoplay.exe, autorun.inf, cabinets, disc.id, install.exe, pcfriend.ico, readme.txt, setup and whv.

is there anyway to compress the 6.99 gigs VIDEO_TS to fit on a dvd as i obviously don't need the above data except for dvd2onex to accept it?

any ideas anyone?

How about this. Mount the .img that OSEx made, and copy all the contained files to a folder on your HD with the same name as the DVD. Then, copy any missing files from the DVD to that folder in the Finder (especially anything missing from the VIDEO_TS folder, everything else isn't really important). Once everything is in the folder, try running DVD2OneX on that folder's VIDEO_TS folder. See how that works out for you. If memory serves, that's how I backed that movie up (or I used DVDExtractor, not too sure, but try the solution above).
