I was just curious if anyone has had any luck backing up TV episodes to dvd? For instance I have 6 Spongebob DVD's that I would like to back up, using DVDxCopy Express and I have not had any success thus far! For some reason the first episode is the only one that is recorded(there are 10 episodes on the disc). Sooo, I was wondering if there are any other methods to back up my TV episode dvds that are not too troublesome? Maybe this question has been asked before, could some please point me in the rigght direction?

Hi,
I've been doing what you plan to do using the following tools:
* TMPGEnc DVD Author (30-day trial available)
* DVDShrink (if I really want to squeeze the last bit out of my DVD-R)
Read the different guides that are available (on this site or links from this site to other sites, in the Tools section). I normally put around three 45-minute episodes on one DVD-R at "half" DVD resolution.
Only if I really need to get more on the one DVD-R, I use DVDShrink to compress even further. I do lose some of the quality that way, but sometimes (in TV episodes anyway) I favour quantity over quality.
By the way: I use PAL as that is the TV standard in the Netherlands - same should apply to NTSC (if you're that way inclined).
Works like a charm!

Use DVDXCopy Platinum. Platinum supports episodic DVD copying as where plain old DVDXCopy does not.

Thank you guys for replying but isn't there a way to copy, lets say, Simpsons season 1 using DVD2One and DVD Decrypter??

i think some have done guide for this but DVDshrink tends to make short work of Tv eps on dvd..
for most disks tend to have 4 eps per a disk. You make disk one be ep 1-2 with no compression and crush to still pics Ep 3-4 to make room.. then make a 2nd disk that is the reverse of that.. Eps 1-2 crushed down and 3-4 left with no compression.. Label them Disk1a and Disk1b or whatever and all done.. Granted this is a bit cheezy but it lets one keep the menu's etc.. Ya just have to swap out the disks more..
or you can just have it crush each ep equal to make a one disk back but you lose a lot that way being it really needs to crush them down.
or you can take DVD shrink, reauthor and if the DVD are ripped to the drive already, drag muti eps to the disk but ya lose menus..
or if you are willing make the menus in say TMPGEnc DVD Author you can take DVD shrink and reathor, then import that DVD into TMPGEnc DVD and make menus.. This would let a person take say 12 simpsons eps by way of DVDshrink, crush them down some but then turn around and make a DVD with chapters and so no..
I tend to always try for the first option of just spliting into two disk with each one having half the eps.. DVD-r are getting cheaper and cheaper and I don't want to have a back up that is a crushed down version. -
Thanks guys for all of you quick responses. I finally figured it out. All you need to back-up Episode DVd's is :
DVD Decrypter
DVD2One
Nero(or some other burning tool)
i just ripped the movie to the HD-Used DVD2One(1.13) to compress full disk so I could keep my menus-Then burned compressed movie with Nero 6. You loose a bit of quality, but I think the quality still looks good! -
If you already have DVD COPY EXPRESS, you might need to upgrade it because now there is an optin to do FULL DISC. its a little box that you check off. I think it says ENTIRE DISC. I backed up the simpsons with it and it works great. some quality loss but its a cartoon and you cant really notice when its in motion.

Hi all.
I guess I am a bit late, but for your infomation I backed up "Friends Series 9", sticking 6 episodes per disc with no apparent loss of quality, using DVD Shrink. -
on a related point on this topic, does anybody know how to make back-ups of 3 dvdrs each with 2 episodes from 2 dvds each originally with 3 episodes.
the purpose of doing this is so that there is no quality loss in the dvdrs. i don't need to retain the menu as there is a sheet of chapter index that serves me just as well.
i know i can use dvdshrink 2.3 to reauthor the first 2 episodes of dvd1 onto the the first dvdr. my question is how do i reauthor the 3rd episode and the subsequent episode (from dvd2) onto the next dvdr?
will greatly appreciate any suggestion here. -
tristandw, simply use DVD Shrink v3.0 beta 5.

Read the first guide to get familiar with v3.0 beta, then the second for the "How-to". -
you're welcome.
thanks for the positive feedback.
