I made a DVD of an AVI file in ffmpegX. It worked fine in DVD player before burning to disk (I opened the Video TS folder in DVD Player) and it works great on both by home and work Macs. When I try it on a stand-alone DVD player (either my Toshiba 2900 or PS2) I get a constatnt start-stop in the video. It does it about every two seconds and the pause is about a second long. It doesn't affect the sound. I used ffmpegX to go directly from the AVI file to the DVD image and then used Disk Copy to burn the disk onto a Meritline cheapie DVD-R blank.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what may have gone wrong?

    TIA,
    Rob

What brand of DVD-R media did you use? Computers are exceptionally forgiving on cheaper media, but standalone players are notoriously picky.

They are a cheap (25 for about $30) plain white DVD-R from Meritline. I have made many other DVDs without problem so I don't think it's the media, although it could have been a bad one.
I love my Mac, but I'd give it up in a second for a...faster Mac.

  4. I have been having the same "start-stop pauses" in my encodings lately... The media is not an issue as I play it back while still on the PC and test on media I know that works in the past.

Is it a frame rate issue in the video tab of TMPGenc's settings? Can an incorrect frame rate setting be the cause?

I think your in the wrong forum man.... MacVideo not PCVideo

but yes, it could be a frame rate problem setting in ffmpegx. Instead, try the app mpeg2works. just doctor the .avi so it plays back with sound in quicktime, then choose the DVD tab that fits the resolution and type (NTSC/PAL) that you want. Just let it process the files into .m2v and .mp2 then let sizzle build the dvd image. Ive done 4 so far with not a single problem.
Then burn to dvd-rw and make sure it plays back with no jitters.

  6. Hehe, didn't even see the thread name...well, the search bar was still useful, after reading that I wasn't the only one with the start-stop in video when using TMPGenc... I did figure it out though.

For me...it was a combination of "frame rate" and "encode mode;" and in the process grasped a better understanding of "video arrange method." Since I'm not giving specifics no one probably gives a flying rat's @$$ as to what I'm talkin' about. But..."3-2 pulldown when playback" should only seem to be used in "encode mode" when the source video's actual "frame rate" is 23.976, else use "non-interlace." This is all based on the goal of NTSC output.

Apologies for my stupidity for posting here, but thx for the reply.
