  1. Can anyone tell me why the captions would show up automatically on some backup DVDs (would automatically show the unwanted English translation at startup of the DVD of an English movie)? Is this considered a subpicture? It can be turned off on the remote, but I don't know what caused it in the first place. Only happens once in a while. Some friends didn't realize the translation could be turned off by the remote and was very annoying to them.

I recently checked "Disable all subpicture except menus and forced streams". Will this eliminate the problem without losing the captions showing up when they are actually needed (ex: English movie and someone speaks French or Arabic, etc., and you want the captions to show)? I was unchecking all the subpicture boxes for a while to make sure that the captions did not show up, but feel this may eliminate needed translation in a bi-lingual movie.

    Thanks

Generally, Forced Streams are the subtitles (or subpictures) that need to be displayed when languages changes, such as Japanese in an otherwise English movie. However if you elect to remove all subpicture streams, there is a good chance this will over-ride the Forced Streams option and leave you with no subtitles at all.

There could be a couple of factors at play here.

    1) Some players, if you set the subtitles to English in the setup menu, turn on the English subtitles on every movie, whether they are forced or not. Annoying, but I have seen (and owned) several that do this. If this is happening a lot, even with commercial discs, check the player.

    2) If it is only hapening on backups then the process or tools are at fault. Test play the files from disc before you burn and try to isolate the culprit. It would help to know what tools you are using.

    3) Current copy protection is getting to the point where weird things are happening to backups. There has been at least one instance reported of subtitles being turned on following a standard rip exercise, simply because the disc structure is now so screwy.

I have a couple of backups where the subs show up in the same spot every time. They are not permanent....just a line or two...but they show up EVERY time.

    Greets,

You can try running your copy through DVDShrink with the option Logical Remapping of Enabled Streams checked under the Output Files setting. This should help put them back in proper 'auto-play' order. Especially if you have removed any subs or audio streams in your backup process.

You can do it in Reauthor mode and not have to worry about recompressing anything. I do this to clean up movie only rips where I want only one subtitle and audiotrack out of several. Then use other programs for compressing further if needed.

    Cheers,
    Rick

And you decided that NOT telling us what you are using to do your backups was a great idea and would help you to get a reply because... ???

It is possible to force subtitles off prior to burning, but to tell you how to do this would require me to give you more information than you gave us. Note that some DVD players might possibly ignore the force off option anyway and still turn them on. guns1inger's suggestions are well worth considering.

  6. Sorry about not listing my programs -- am now using DVDFabHD (latest version at the time), DVD Shrink, ImageBurn (latest version at time). Really liked RipIt4Me, but without updates had to go with DVDFabHD (free version, so have to rip full disk every time).

DVD Player is Phillips 642 (one new and one older, captions show up on both, so must be in the disk).

Only happens once in a while (of course, don't have that many movies with multi-languages), but was just wondering if it was only an unchecked box somewhere or a box that shouldn't have been checked. Thanks for all your suggestions.
