  1. Does anybody know how you can tell if a prticular player will play a Pal DVD on and ntsc TV. I have HDTV Sony TV. I have found on a couple of websites modified progressive scan DVD players, with code free, and NTSC-PAL conversion built in. Apparently they modify these themselves, but is the PAL/NTSC a software modification (I do not believe it is), and the models they modify have zero hacks listed on this site. I have succesfully modified an APex player to be code free, but it is not progressive scan, and when I play a PAL DVD it is black and white and jumping all over the screen (even though the menu screen is prefect? Any input is appreciated, or model numbers that you are using. Thank you.

I think you might have a problem here. Virtually all UK spec PAL DVD players will also play NTSC disks and output a signal that is compatible with a PAL TV. However, you want to do it the other way round. Like many things, DVD players suffer the US attitude that if it isn't the US way of doing things it doesn't exist. For this reason, I think you may have a problem playing PAL DVDs on an NTSC player and TV.

I have a Daewoo DVD-5800. I mainly use it to play NTSC DVD/VCDs, but a friend of mine let me borrow a couple PAL SVCDs, and these played with one minor change in the DVD player's setup... I had to change the DVD player's TV setting from "Multi" to "NTSC"; after that the player knew it was connected to an NTSC TV and played the PAL disks just fine on the NTSC TV. Before changing this setting, the movie was black&white and quite jumpy and unwatchable. See if your DVD player has something like this in its setup menu...
