    Does anyone have any experience with the Sony Media Converter DVMC-DA2?

    From reading the various reviews on the web, this looks to be the machine to get to help convert VHS tapes to VCD format. It can even convert back to VHS tape too. If it really does work as advertised, then many of the discussions here regarding conversion can be addressed by this machine.

    The only negative seems to be that it costs $300 or so.

    It is not a VCD converter, it's a DV converter. After converting your analog video to DV, you then need to software convert the DV to Mpeg-1 VCD format. (or mpeg-2 for SVCD formats)
