you don't need to buy a new DVD player and hack it. there is a macrovision decoder box you plug inline between your player and recorder and it will decode the macrovision signal as it plays. costs about $40. I know you can get them at lik-sang.com but there are probably some domestic sites to order from as well.

He is right. $25 US for this converter. -
You need two disable two things to be able to do this...
1. Macrovision Copy Protection - You can either buy a black box as was suggested from Lik Sang, or get a DVD player whose firmware is hackable.
2. Disable the CGMS signal your DVD player puts out which tells the Panasonic Recorder not to record. For this you can either get a time base corrector(?) or again get a DVD player whose firmware is hackable.
You need to get arround both, to make the backup. I picked up a cheap SAMPO player which was pretty hackable. Look at www.area450.com for tons of info.
That said it is probably faster, once you know how to make backups with a PC and a DVD burner. -
