  1. Hey guys... Ill be quick..

Im making backups of my dvd's and I noticed something. Obviously there is a multiple audio formats AC3, DTS, THX etc. If I only inlcude the AC3 6ch and not the AC3 2ch, Ive been told that the dvd player wont downmix the 6ch AC3 into 2ch AC3. However I just made a copy of Back to the Future with _just_ the AC3 6ch on it, nothing else. Accually I didnt even see an AC3 2ch for the Main movie. And yes I did rip the movie with DVD Decrypter.. selecting all the files not just the main movie. Anyway .. it seemed to work. I was told that I wont get voices and such casue its an Anolog signal from the dvdplayer to the tv (just red and white rca). I notice that some movies have AC3 2ch and some dont. Like 'The Recruit' has AC3 6ch

So is this true? I understand that if I only include DTS or THX audio tracks I wont be able to listen thru an anolog signal (RCA).

The Screenshot is from top to bottom selecting dir, then selecting which stream to rip, then what audio.. as you can see... no AC3 2ch. There is one but thats for the Directors Comment. As I said I have tried ripping with just the AC3 6ch and it seems to work. BTW im using DVD2ONE

Also if someone would be so kind as to explain the difference between audio formats ... AC3 2ch, AC3 6ch, DTS, THX, Dolby Digital etc...

  2. Don't panic !

All DVD players can handle Dolby 5.1 and below - it's part of the spec. They can all decode this and downmix to stereo for example.

HOWEVER, things like DTS is still somewhat of the new kid on the block, and while most players with a co-axial or optical out can output this, relatively few can actually DECODE it themselves, leaving that to the amplifier / receiver.

Therefore, if you only have the DTS soundtrack on a disc but you don't have a suitable decoder, you get silence. There is not an issue with only having 5.1, 2 channel Dolby or ADPCM stereo.
