  1. Can anyone help? I am trying to convert files to put onto a DVD+R, I have searched the guides and forums and I've got quite a bit of information about converting DIVX, XVID, AVI etc.. to DVD R.
I have tried the different ways that have been explained using TMPGEnc Plus and finally got a movie to start to encode. The downside of it was that the 'time remaining' started at 9hrs and so many minutes and was rising, when it got to 16hrs after encoding only 3% I decided to stop it.
Can anyone tell me why it takes so long or what I am doing wrong. I am completely new to this and would appreciate any kind of help. Thanx

Glad to see you've read through the guides.

You'll need to give more details for some help. You only say "files".

What are you encoding from and to?

What type/size file, what settings you were using, were you applying filters,? etc. etc.

If you come back with more info, someone will probably be able to help.

What computer specs are you on? 16 hrs for 2 hrs movie (my guess) seems like pretty much, but with a low spec box, it's not all that out of bounds...
Filters, resizing, motion search precision and stuff also affects encoding times dramatically. (Never use Highest motion search - it takes forever, and is not noticably better than High, which is much faster)

  4. From looking at your specs your time is correct. You may be able to shave some off by not running any other programs, defragging your hard drive etc... However the only way you will really be able to overcome this is by getting a new pc.

  5. Thanx for advice so far and so promptly. I am actually in the process of looking for a new PC as I have had this one for 2 and a half years now.
I will persevere for the time being and call back if I need further help or advice. Thanx

We'll look forward to your return with your super 'puter. :c) Good luck.

Oh, if you have any questions about components while you're shopping, there's a lot of exceedingly clued up people in the Computer Forum here also. You could read there for info on what people have found works best for them.

Your time is about right for a sub 1 Ghz box. You can tweak that with some TMPG settings, particulary the search precision (use the middle option) and no filters.

I suggest you work like the rest of us, settup your encoding before you go to bed. The next day after school/work it should be done (this typically gives you 18-20 hours to encode). Having a faster machine I settup batches and usually have 2 or 3 backups encoded in a similar timeslot.

My 2.4 Ghz Athlon takes rougly 8 hours to backup a 2 hour DVD medium-high search precision. I'm not sure of the exact time, I'm not around when it finishes :P
