  1. I have been reading several of the posts and trying to figure out the best solution. My objective is to take my daughter's two dance recital dvd's and extract only their dances and then make a new dvd for grandma.

First I was able to rip into chapters with SmartRipper. Renamed the VOB's to MPG. Used Pinnacle 8 Studio to make a DVD.

Problem: there is no sound once Pinnacle created the DVD.

I tried using the streams of SmartRipper to get audio in a separate file, but it will not separate out the chapters.

I have not invested any money in Pinnacle since it came with my DV camcorder.

Am I using the right tools and methods?

  2. You might want to check out the newest DVDShrink. It can take out video based on chapters. There is a guide for it on this sight.

  3. That worked but the dances are on two different disks. DVD Shrink only opens one disk at a time.

Is there a VOB to MPG 1/2 Converter? Renaming the files doesn't appear to work for Pinnacle.

  4. Do not use Pinnacle Studio version 8 for comercial DVD backup. It is not designed to do that. There are better ways how to backup commercialn DVD.

  5. I am not actually trying to backup the DVD, I am trying to pick off around 5 chapters from each DVD. Then I want to create my own menus and burn the DVD.

Smart Ripper has successfully separated each chapter into individual VOB's. The VOB's will play in media player and power dvd.

My question is how do I get from the VOB to something that I can create a new DVD from? Which tools should I use?

I continue to search his forum but have not found the solution. I know I am not the first to try this. Any help is greatly appreciated.

DVD Shrink 3.0 beta can open different DVDs in reauthor mode. Just drag the Titles into the new window. The only thing about this method is that you don't have menus. It'll be a movie only.

You can look into TMPGenc DVD Author. It can accept VOBs from different DVDs too and let's you have a custom menu.

  8. DVD Lab did exactly what I wanted to do. I knew it was just a matter of finding the right tool.

Thanks for all of the help.
