Ok, I know this is a bad thing to do, but I have a project where the output needs to be VHS. The question is: Better to go DVD to VHS on the settops by hooking them together, or use a scan converter and go directly from the PC to VHS after the project is complete?

The reason I'm asking is that scan converters are a bit expensive. If I'm going to get the same quality either way, I can just hook up the set top devices and do this whenever necessary.

    Thoughts or experience appreciated.

  2. Well, I did not have the best quality DVD to start with, but I had no problem with just playing the DVD in the setop player and recording on the VCR. Other than it takes 2hrs to record a two hour tape, and your gonna end up with that anyway!
To me my DVD -r and the VHS tape look the same, but my eyes aren't the best and your result may vary depending on equipment, objects in mirror are closer tha... ahh never mind

Use good high quailty cables from the DVD output jacks into the VCR input jacks. If you have any loss of quality, it will probably be because of cables or alalog tape recording, not DVD playing. Also S-video may be better than RCA jacks if you have the option.

If you have a real DVD quality DVD r to play in the setop, I dought you would lose any more quality than just going to analog is gonna lose anyway. And you can always connect the TV to the VCR to see what you are getting, I "THINK" it will be the same as the tape! Heck, easy enough, give a 15 minute test and see what you get

I have no experience with a scan converter though.

I used a Norcent DP 300 DVD player and a Sanyo VCR, and my disks were originally made from an analog camcorder capture. Not the very best quality recordings to start with.

Sometimes we must do what we must do
I needed 3 or 4 VHSs for people without DVD players, and 9 DVDs.
