    The cheapest, in my opinion, is Virtual Dub mod with Sub Station Alpha -- free. The easiest, to me anyway, is with Video Studio 6.

  3. I lean towards AVISynth, results are the same, I think AVISynth is faster.

    On second thought, do you want to add perm subtitles, or selectable? If you add perm subtitles you will have to rencode, so you will lose picture quailty. And selectable are not as compatible.

    I use perm subtitles, eventho my player supports selectable subs. 1/2 my movies are in Mandarin/Cantonese/Japanese, I dont speak any of the languages, so I have to have subtitles on, so whats the point of having it selectable if I'm always turning it on.
    Ejoc's CVD Page:
    DVDDecrypter -> DVD2AVI -> Vobsub -> AVISynth -> TMPGEnc -> VCDEasy

    DVD:
    DVDShrink -> RecordNow DX

    Capture:
    VirualDub -> AVISynth -> QuEnc -> ffmpeggui -> TMPGEnc DVD Author
