I have an HD .ts movie on my hard drive that I want to add subtitles to and then reauthor as an HD-DVD. The reauthoring part I have no problem with. The problem I'm having is finding a proggie that will work with HD files. They all seem to be for dvds. So far what I've tried is transcoding the HD .ts files into mpeg2 and then opening it in virtualdubmod, adding the .srt sub file using the video filter textsub.vdf. Appartently VDM can only save the file in avi, ogg, or mkv format, so I haven't tried to save the file yet. I figure I can save it uncompressed(I want the subs to be burned in, will they automatically be?), then convert one of those file formats back to its original mpeg2 state, which is where I need it in order to be able to author it as an HD-DVD.

So will this give me burned in subs? Will it work?
Is there an easier way? Has anybody tried adding subs to a HD ts. file before?
How do I convert an avi/ogg/mkv file back to an mpeg2 file without lowering the resolution?

Thanks for any and all help I get.

You can frameserve to a mpeg2 hd encoder like tmpgenc, www.videohelp.com/virtualdubframeserve

A uncompressed hd file would be huuuuuuuuuuuuuge.

ha, ya that's what I thought, and one of the things that stopped me from trying it out already. I'll read through that guide and see if I can make out how to do it. Thanks for the link.

to do something like this with HD files, would I need TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress or MPEG Editor 2.0? And also does a freeware mpeg2 hd encoder exist?

Ok, I'm back after a long absence to ask this same question. I never got around to trying this out before, but now I have a copy of TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress installed on my PC and I want to try this again with the same TS file. But here's my problem:

I have the video file and srt subtitle file loaded up in virtualdubmod, and I frameserve them, following the guide posted up to a T. Then I open the dummy .avi file with TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to proceed from there! I don't know how to simply encode the file without converting it. I'm totally lost, so if anyone knows how to do this I'd really appreciate the help.

    Thanks in advance!
