  1. Well, kick me in my shins and call me Sally.

The main reason I started learning how to make VCDs and DVDs all those months ago was to transfer a certian short lived television show (the live action tick) from my VHS tapes. I am just at the point where I am willing to throw the original tapes away. And what do I find out? Yep, they are releasing the entire series on DVD come Sept. 30!

Well, I am still glad I learned

  2. But you are still definitely glad you learned though aren't you?

I actually started learning to make VCDs and SVCDs so I could put TV shows onto them, to actually avoid buying those overpriced DVD box-sets (like £50/£60 for a one-series box set. Not something someone my age can afford to do every week, or every month even).

But now I am glad I learned because I have a skill which many people I know don't have, and when they try it I can always help them by givinng them pointers.

And help people on this great site too of course!!

Oh, of course, I an glad I learned.

Its just ironic is all. I am still going to buy the DVD for the superior quality. My copies have SERIOUS ghost issues.

Plus, there was one episode never aired in the USA (only over seas), thus I don't have it on VHS. But it is included on the DVD!!!!

    Solarjet -

    could be worse.

last March, after waiting years for "The Haunting" (the 1963 version) to come out, I finally decided to track down a Laserdisc copy. So I bought a laserdisc player from eBay, then I found a copy of "The Haunting" in widescreen.

won the auction - $50. this was on a Monday night.

Tuesday morning, Warner Brothers announces a bunch of catalog material coming out on DVD... The Omega Man, Soylent Green... and The Haunting.

    gah-DAMMIT!

flipped the Laserdisc back on eBay for $20... took a $30 bath on it, 'cause everybody like me was just going to wait for the dvd. Omega Man and Soylent Green LD's dropped like a stone as well...

that's okay, though... I still have my Lon Chaney LD's that aren't going to be out for another two years or so....

  6. poor housepig.

yeah, that kinda stinks. I once bought a used copy of "The princess bride" for a gift at around $25 (VHS). This was during the time they were no longer selling it new. About a month later, it was re-released for $12 on DVD.

But, even though my TV series is coming out on DVD (which I am so happy it is because of the unaired episode) I would not have invested in all my video capture equipment JUST for that series. I have other stuff as well. I would have just brought it to a shop for them to convert it if that was the case. So I consider myself out no more money than the cost of a blank DVD I udes to burn it.

Heck, I bought my cap cards, video out card, programs, etc., strictly to put my youngest's wedding tape on CD.

If I'd known I was gonna get so damn involved in this stuff, I might have thunk about it a little more.

I'm still not doing DVDs, so still having the fun and challenge of getting a decent product on VCD, SVCD.

Was looking at the series packages at BB today, and they were running from 30 or so for 4 and 5 episodes of "Andromeda", to 80 per season of "Babylon 5". Personally, I think that's a rip-off.

A bigger rip-off, tho' was a vendor at the comp show today who was trying to twist my arm into buying a + burner, who was going to throw in, completely free, a burnt disk with DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink, AND a burnt disk with Nero 5.5.. OEM, of course, don't think it even had cables..

He was kinda miffed I didn't buy it JUST to get those valuable programs. By the time I got done "educating" him, his eyes were just a little glassy.

Well, you've seen some of my posts, guess I rambled on a little with him, too.

    Wow! just checked B5 series one as a R1 and R2 release. the R2 release is £33.74, the R1 release is $84.99, that's £53.70 !!
    Both prices are from amazon.
Yeah, the day star wars comes out on DVD i'll be cursing these expensive laser disc bastards!
I got into this whole mess because i'd downloaded the nine inch nails music video collection from nineinchnails.net, and wanted to watch them on my TV. Well, more specifically, i'd used a TV out card to tape them onto VHS, my (then) girlfriend openly laughed at the shitty quality, and i knew there must be a way to get them to work on a dvd player. just over two years later.... here i am. £100's of hardware and software, but i'll never have to buy a replacement DVD, so i guess it's worth it in the long run
