That is a "sticky' post posted by the guy who owns this site. At the time he posted it, more sophisticated copy protection schemes were emerging that couldn't be broken by DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. Neither of these programs were being updated so they didn't work on the newest forms of copy protection. What WAS annoying was the endless flood of posters asking the same question over and over and over again - "I can't copy ________ DVD, what's wrong?"

I meant the BIGGER font-size for the thread title looks annoying.
Apologies for not being sufficiently-explicit =^.^=

Baldrick has intentions of switching to phpbb3 so any fixes will only slow him down. He's got big job as phpbb is integrated extensively elsewhere on this site.

As I said, the continuous barrage of posters asking the same question again and again was becoming very annoying to a lot of people. The larger font size wasn't intended for the aesthetic viewing pleasure of people such as you; it was an attempt to make the topic more visible to hasty / thoughtless posters. if you had been around at that time, you would have seen what I am talking about.

In an unusual quirk of fate, I do indeed agree with you.

The flood hasn't stopped, and I'd venture that the font isn't actually large enough, and that this post should be a sticky in all forums, as the people too stupid to rip also seem to be incapable of posting in the right forums most of the time, and hence miss the sticky where it is.

    This should work:

    Code:
    <span style="font-size: 500px; font-weight: bold"><marquee><blink>"Isn't this annoying"</blink></marquee></span>

Most n00bs seem completely unaware of what a sticky is, and don't read them at all, no matter what font size.

Why not send a short FAQ, the REALLY frequenty asked questions, in the welcome message to people when they first subscribe. And/or make the confirmation page a FAQ page with a box to click at the end.

I'd suggest waiting to Baldrick makes the switch before making any suggestions, any suggestions now are really a moot point. As I said it will only slow the progress for him making the switch and I really doubt he would make them anyway a its pretty much pointless. phbb3 addresses amny of these problems or makes it much easier to do so, the permission set is quite extensive so you can for example add a switch for every page so rules get emblazoned across the top for newbies yet won't appear for regulars. The PM one suggested by AlanHK is good one, there is mod for that already that I myself will be using on my own forum just for that purpose.

phpbb v1 & 2 really blew...who has time to update customized boards all year? phpbb has been knocked off the net several times by hackers making a point....there were too many chiefs (coders) and not enough indians (checkers) when this crud was written...
then I found there are several groups around that specialize in hacking phpbb through flooding, backdoors, and revealing passwords...
I'm assuming most problems were solved in v3 but everybody thought the same thing about 1 & 2 so don't take my word for it
another problem is there aren't many good boards around except the big boys
however, with the big boys come security, free updates, help, etc...

If you're running unmodified forum it's just a matter of upload and overwrite the files and run the database script, couple of minutes at most. On a modified forum it can take a few minutes if you know what you are doing.

phpbb has been knocked off the net several times by hackers making a point
    .

phpbb has had its security problems like every piece of software but those issues were always addressed quickly. The majority of forums that have been hacked all have one basic theme "My 2 year out of date forum has been hacked". Just like any software it has security holes and vulnerabilities, you need to stay on top of the updates and that includes updating any mods you make. If you're running a browser that's 3 years old and your computer gets infected you don't blame the software, you blame the dumbass that didn't update it.

however, with the big boys come security, free updates, help, etc..
    1. There has been no updates to phpbb2 for over a year now. Why? Because no security holes have surfaced. It should also be mentioned that phpbb3 went through a independent paid security audit prior to the gold release, no major exploits found.

    2. phpbb upadates have always been free.

    3. phpbb.com has very active community that will not only provide you with basic help but also provide advanced help and discussion on modifications, styling etc. There's no comparison to the support you will recieve there.

Since mosts sites are small, a simple solution to post announcements and comments to them (blog) is through a little .dat file
Too bad they don't know it...

    I have to disagree.
I've found vBulletin to be far more helpful (since 2007) than phpBB ever was (since 2000).
