  1. I've recently come across a couple .avi files with an embedded subtitle track, and have no idea how to display the subtitles. VLC will acknowledge the subtitle track, but is unable to recognize what kind of data it is, let alone utilize it. Mplayer seems to require subtitles to be part of a separate file, and I haven't been able to find another program for OSX/OS9 that can extract or display the subtitle data. The windows program that was recommended for viewing the subtitles was VOBsub, but there doesn't seem to be a mac equivalent. Does anyone know a way to make this work on a mac, or will I have to burn the files on CD and hunt down someone with a windows machine?

It is strange that VLC will not decode the subtitle track... It is not a seperate file? Meaning it is interleaved within the avi? Ar you using the latest version of VLC? Could you provide a sample?

  3. I'm using VLC 0.6.2, and the subtitle track is interleaved within the AVI. I've just discovered that Textation 1.1.1 can read the subtitles, but will not export them without the program being registered.

  4. okay... VLC does work to display it. for some reason, it wasn't working when i dragged the file onto the VLC icon to launch it, but when i open VLC then select the file with the "open file" dialogue, it works fine.
