Quick search on GOOGLE told me you can use WINZIP to open TAR-files.

I think TAR is the UNIX version of ZIP but could be wrong.

tar is an archive format commonly used on UNIX systems, but it isn't quite like zip (zip is also readily available on UNIX, but it's very rarely used). tar, by itself, does not do any compression because one of its original uses was for moving files to and from tapes(TAR = Tape ARchive). WinZip, WinRar, PowerArchiver, and most of the various other Windows graphical archiving programs can open and extract tar files, but I think that most of them can not create tar archives.

  5. Ren & Stimpy, you are correct. It's the UNIX/LINUX archival(similar to RAR). GZIP is the UNIX/LINUX equivalent of WINZIP. Some times people use both to get maximum compression.

I don't know if WINZIP can read TAR or not, never tried, I've only ever used the TAR stuff on my LINUX machine.
