I'm trying to make a video CD of some music video's I like. One of the video's I want is available on a streaming server, in an ASF. I've successfully downloaded the source ASF file from other servers so I can play it at my leisure, but this is different. I looked at the html source and found the video url, in the mms://... format. When I paste that mms URL into the open dialog in WMP it plays fine. But the File->Save As... menu option is dimmed. This happened to me before, so, I went to my linux box and used wget to download it by replacing the mms with http. It kept giving me a little asf file, a few hundred bytes giving me the URL I just sent it. And no music video ASF. Does anyone know how I can save the music video locally so I can work on it? Thanks, Nathan.

ASFRecorder.exe
Note from its file
Until now, most people thought Microsoft streaming media cannot be saved or
copied...
This program creates the possibility to DOWNLOAD LEGACY AND COPYRIGHTED
CONTENT - live or pre-recorded - from any Microsoft streaming media server
that offers HTTP streaming. This has the potential to make some headlines
in the news.
Sorry dont know its location...

Yeah and get the Flying Raichu patch on that page too... and use Streambox to record and ASFRecorder if all else fails

I successfully stored the ASF and it plays fine. I'm using TMPEGEnc to convert it to mpeg as per the convert help here. When it encodes, it starts out at a decent speed, but after like 10%, it slows down to where the whole program will lock up, says Windows' Task Manager, then a couple minutes later, it will process the next set of frames, which I can see in the log. Is it typical of TMPEGEnc to encode ASF's into mpeg's in this manner?

The best thing for .asf is to convert the .asf to .avi format... Use VirtualDub1.3c with patch available here, then go both audio, video DIRECT STREAM COPY, and save the .avi.
Yeah they are all great programs! ...except they can't record password protected streams (such as pornnot that anyone would want to do that.)

I'm trying that now but when I go to open the asf file, I get a n error:
"ASF: parse error -- too many segments in packet at 359 (3 expected)", "packet size = f50, send time: 0:00"
What can I do with this? -
It's a 1min process to fill out the account sign up form... just fill it with bogus information... plus I think some of the files offered there are worth the 1 min it takes to sign up.

Right where was I... Oh yes The capture programs will capture sound and video that is being displayed on your screen. So these can be used to capture live streams protected or not.

You play it online as normal and use a capture program to save it to hard drive

I have a question (I don't have these programs yet). I too want to download streaming video files to convert/burn. My question is, do these recorder-type programs actually DOWNLOAD the video file, or do they CAPTURE the video that is displayed on your screen? I'd much rather download the file, since sometimes it can hesitate and skip while streaming.
