  1. I bought this writer last week and installed it with no problems.

I used Nero 6 to burn quite a few episodes of a TV program that were taking up space on my HD. Still no problems.

My wife asked me to burn a backup CD for a new audio CD she bought, and when I tried to burn a copy it failed.

Since then I cannot access anything I put into the drive. I get a message to insert a disk into the drive.

I am running win2K, use Nero 6 and all burning was done on cd-r's so far.

The disk was bought OEM and no disks came with it. Also it is an IDE internal drive.

    Any help will be appreaceated.
    Thanks.

Maybe its one of those 'copy-protected' audio cd's

If you're lucky, you may be able to download new firmware onto it.

  3. I haven't heard about the new copy-protected cd's.

What do they do? Clear the firmware off the drive?

  4. Update:
Flashed the firmware with herrie's latest and I still cannot detect any cd-r's.
I can however detect DVD's. I am not sure if I could do that before I flashed it, but would like to get the burner to detect cd-r's as well as DVD's

Anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

  5. "Protected" CD's won't kill your drive, don't worry. They are deliberately mastered with flaws in them (so they don't conform to the standard) in order to try and fool the drives used in copying them. They work with varying degrees of success - including being unreadable in a good many players - which has caused a lot of backlash and complaints, thus there aren't that many out there. Philips in particular have been making efforts to ensure such discs are labelled since they do not conform to their patents and standards, thus cannot bear the Compact Disc logo.

If you're using hacked firmware, go back to the genuine stuff (if it will let you !!) and see if the full functionality returns. I have heard of some DVD writers losing CD functionality after being flashed with illegitimate firmware, but this was a long time ago. BTW, you've thrown your warranty away if you've used hacked firmware, so if it has killed it, you could have to pay to get it repaired, assuming of course the manufacturer will touch it.

  6. I would not have thought that protected CD's would do anything to my burner either, but since I tried to backup that cd, my burner hasn't been able to detect cd-r's. Thing is, I stuck the same original audio cd in my wifes computer and it instantly caused problems with her cdr burner.

At the moment I have re-flashed my firmware with original NEC version again and that has not fixed the problem.

  7. i remember reading an article about copy protection cd's and how they could destroy apple dvd drives. i wonder if that is related to your problem.

i think the poster from england didn't read your post correctly, he didnt' start having problems because of the hacked firmware his problems started before that. there's nothing wrong with that firmware...they have a new version out anyway (official) from nec v106. you can use herrier's flash program to flash the 106 on there.
Ironically, the official windows flash program NEC released, ruined a bunch of drives...so in this case, the "hacked' firmware and flash program worked better than the official one
