Well, about two weeks ago I purchased 25 DVD+R's for 30 bucks. Not a bad deal but I didn't really read the memorex label b4 purchasing and now I don't know what to do. The label specifically says that first and second gen dvd writer drives, which includes my current writer, need a firmware upgrade to be fully compatible with the new 4X write discs. Damn! So I emailed HP tech support and of coursed they don't give me any help and it took two emails to them to make them realize the link they gave me had no firmware for my dvd drive! Dumb-asses, I should be working there, would know more than they do that's for sure!

So now I'm screwed and don't know what to do...maybe just pray a firmware upgrade becomes available for my drive????

    What do you guys suggest?

  2. I would think you could still write at 1X or 2X if your drive supports DVD+R writing in general.

I have a hp 200e and I use 4x blanks. No firmware upgrade....I am sure it meant that you need to upgrade the firmware to "BURN" at 4 speed. You should still be able to at your drives top speed as it is.

Well that is a relief!!!!! I would have hated to not be able to use these 25 DVD's since I got a great deal on them in the first place!

I will have to burn onto one to see if everything goes ok...but thanks for the support on this! :P

It all depends on the specific burner and the specific media. Hopefully it works out for pyrate, but there's a good chance the burn process either won't write at all, or will halt during the write process somewhere.

I guess they will find out soon enough.

Memorex ships a warning slip in the package, specific to Pioneer Drives. Bought some at Comp USA last weekend.

  9. Best bet is to...

    1. determine exaclty which drive you have (HP ships a number of diff drives)
    2. determine which firmware it has
    3. find the right one... sometimes can be found at the drives manufactures site
    4. upgrade if necessary

If you do have to up the firmware, don't trust just any one that comes along. If it messed up your drive you'd be mad at whom ever you got it from. Upgrading firmware isn't always 100%. If there's a chance of break'n your drive... don't take chances. HP might sell you a new drive for some $$$$ if needed.
