im interesting in purchasing a dvd player and was wondering wich of these 2 players (philips 724 or malata 393) will be the best value for my money
i want the dvd player to have good audio and picture quality
as well as be able to play svcd and vcd
p.s. the philips is priced at 100cdn$$
while the malats is priced at 50cdn

Philips 724 is probably you're best bet out of the two. Better A/V quality and better build. But don't get stuck on one brand. Also check out the Toshiba 3950. It's 20-30 dollars more but worth it.

the toshiba doesnt support svcd though so im not gonna buy it since the main reason im buying a dvdplayer is the ability to play svcd fully

The Malata is like a tinker toy, very cheap remote, and probably can't replace the remote with a universal. But INCREDIBLE compatability with everything I've tried. Can even play back PAL DVD's to view on NTSC sets. Great value and its $45 now at future shop! My KVCD's that would lag on a $200 sony playback flawlessly.
