  1. Apple has released iDVD 3.01 update and the Apple Knowledge Base acknowledges that with this you can now utilize iDVD on a system without a superdrive but of course cannot burn. I have a 867 Titanium w/o Superdrive that I would like to install iDVD 3 along with the update so I can create my iDVD Project while traveling and then transfer those files to my Superdrive iMac at home and burn. I own the iLife CDs and the iDVD 3 will not load because of the inability to locate a superdrive on the powerbook. It seems that I could copy the application folder over from my iMac but I don't know if I will be missing any important installation files. Another possibility would be if someone knows of an installer or extractor utility that could help me install iDVD.
    Thanks

    hmmmm .........
the propblem would be that the v3.0 is going to look for a superdrive.
I have not heard about this update making it "non-superdrive" requiring.

I know my comptuer came preinstalled with iDVD and i didnt have a superdrive at the time, so it wouldnt work until i installed a superdrive

Per your situation, im pretty sure you can just burn the .app thats on your iMac to a cd and then just drag and drop it to your applicatoins folder on yoru powerbook. Then run the update.

its worth a try, especially since its not going to install directly off the disk

OR, this just came to me, you could network the two together, mount the HD of the powerbook to your iMac, and install though the network to your powerbook. that might make it work since your iMac has the superdrive and will load the installer.

  3. I just talked to the "Genius Bar" at my local Apple Store. His explanation is that all Macs this year (2003) (Superdrive and not) came loaded with iDVD 3 ( My 2002 867 Powerbook came with iDVD2) and by installing the update on the Non-Superdrive model it made the application functional with the exception of burning. Apple was aware that it would do this and it is fine with it but he said that Apple is stil protective of iDVD and would not support it's installation on pre-2003 Macs. It's a curious situation.

Even if you could theoretically install iDVD 3.0.1 on a newer mac without a superdrive...Can iDVD do anything but burn a project? If you can't create a VIDEO_TS folder with iDVD, or make some sort of DVD image file, and the only way to get anything useable OUT of iDVD is to burn directly from it, it would be useless for anyone without a superdrive.

I'd like to be able to use it, and then just save the project as a VIDEO_TS folder. Of course, it'd be even nicer if we got rid of that 90 min time limit.

Ah well, just have to wait for DVDSP 2 in Sept.

  5. According to the Apple Knowledge Base and the Genius Bar iDVD3.01 works fine on the Non-Superdrives. For burning they say to just copy your files to the Superdrive model and burn. I also asked the question at the Apple Store if this 3.01 release was a hint that Apple is possibly considering iDVD for use on other firewire drives. He said that was probably not going to happen soon considering the way that they went after the "enabler" patches last year.

With the newer Macs apparently being able to run iDVD3 (but not burn), you can use the forthcoming Toast 6 to burn your iDVD3 projects. Toast 6 will reportedly support iDVD projects for burning purposes.

yes, but no matter how you look at it....................
you still will need a superdrive to burn the product. I guess for this person its ok, since he wants to work on them when on the run (ie powerbook) but for those with desktop's its sort of crazy, cause you need the dvd burner to be able to burn the dvd.

toast 6 is going to be AWESOME!!

No way! That's SICK! As if toast will support iDVD projects. That's sweet. But yeah, i dont think I'll need a superdrive..as long as toast lets you burn iDVD projects with a firewire drive.

Basically, as long as you can run iDVD and save projects, you can then use that project in Toast 6 for ANY dvd burner.
    Very nice indeed.

And yes, Galactica, Toast 6 looks amazing. It's going to be a huge update. It's no longer going to be CD burning software..but more like, well, "anything involving optical drives" software. Glad to hear it's on the way.

I think there is some confusion.......... i am refering to superdrive as the dvd burner. It seems pointless to do any of this if all you have is a combodrive or just a cdburner.

    Nonononono.

I've got a DVD burner alright. I'm just saying that if you can open iDVD and create a project without having a "superdrive", you could technically finish the project up to the point of burning. That's the ONLY time you really need a superdrive. At that point, if toast actually can read DVD projects, you can just burn the project through toast, which works with any dvd writer.

Hence, being able to use iDVD with 3rd party drives.

If i'm missing something crucial here, just totally disregard this post. I've been known to go on rants.

I think its just that some people think superdrive = apple installed drive.

I claim a superdirve to be any drive that burns cd's and dvd's.
My understanding is that iDVD will work ie, open and you can build projects, without the presence of a "superdrive" with this update.

to actually be able to BURN this project would require the presencse of a "superdrive" ie dvd burner.

  12. Hello again-
I posted on the Apple Site about installing iDVD3. They responded with the instructions on how to do it and said the Apple Knowledge Base will post the instructions shortly. Along with the 3.01 Updater, I now have it running on my Non-Superdrive powerbook. Interesting, what an earlier poster said about upcoming Toast 6 giving me the opportunity to use 3rd party drives with my project files. Will it work?

Well......... that is until Toast 6.0 is released. But yes, you are correct.
