Hi guys, this is my first post here but I hope to be able to contribute over time!

    I have a problem as follows >

I have several AVI movies which I want to convert to MPEG (The reason being AVI's dont run smoothly on my computer - MPEGs do!). The problem is it took me 16hrs to convert a 2hour movie!

I was using TMPGEnc to convert the file, I used settings which (I assumed) would give a relativley FAST conversion rate but this wasnt the case. I wonder if there is any way to speed up the process?

I thought 16hrs was way to long so I got hold of a short (1 minute long) AVI file and tried converting it to see if it was the large file size causing the problem - alas it took around 10 minutes to convert, Im pretty sure this is a touch too long.

    Anyone have any advice?

    :edit:
btw, I tinkered with the settings as best I could to try and resolve it but still, no luck. I used info from http://dvd-hq.info/Compression.html and https://www.videohelp.com/divxtovcd.htm

on a 400mhz machine any encode is going to take a while. encoding is sped up by processor power, not amount of memory

  3. I am having the same issue...although maybe it just takes a long time. I tried to convert about 2 hrs of AVI files (covnerted fron old VHS tapes) to MPEG2 using procoder and it took over 11 hours. I have an AMD 1.33 Ghz machine with 768 Meg of memory.

Remember than an AMD-K2 is an antique. It lacks support for SSE2/MMX2 instruction sets (not sure about SSE/MMX), which are required for some software. 16 hours on that chip isn't bad. Probably a 2 hour job on a Athlon 2000+.

AVI's (MPEG4) require more CPU power to decode than MPEG2, due to the higher compression.

  5. Yeah, one hour source on my old 433 machine to MPEG-2 (SVCD) took about 10.5 hours. And that was with no filtering or anything. A standard VCD took me about 5.5 hours per source hour....

  7. I only have Celeron 400MHz and I can encode a two hour movie to mpeg1 VCD in 7 - 8 hours using the standard TMPGenc settings with the templates. Mpeg2 SVCD usually takes about 12 - 13 hours

Aare Converter does it quicker for AVI to VCD depending on the size of the AVI it can be done in less than 2 hrs... I turn off everything that has to access the HD when encodering, (memory recovery, antivirus an etc..)

This program does SVCD and DVD from AVIs (divx and Xivd) just have to make sure that the proper codecs are installed.
