Are You Rebuying Your VHS Movies On DVD?

Yes, but there are a few I can't find.

  2. "Yes, But I Can't Find Some" seems to be the common denominator.

I wonder why some movies just haven't made it to DVD. Looking behind me, up against the wall, is a rack with a bunch of VHS movies I can't find on DVD. 12 movies to be exact. I always felt these where good movies.

How does a B movie like LASERBLAST get to DVD yet... The Dream Team with Michael Keaton does not. And why did it take so long for the Raiders trilogy to come out... due this fall. Speilberg & Lucas are losing a bunch of money.

Some of their NON released movies are selling on e-bay by the bucket load. I'd like to believe it's because they are NOT in it for the money but, I do believe they have a hidden agenda.

it's all about who owns the distribution rights.

I remember trying to find a replacement copy of Phantasm on VHS, and it was not available new in any format - the distributor that was the last owner of the distro rights had gone into bankruptcy, leaving hundreds of movies in limbo.

The only movie that got spared was "When Harry Met Sally"... that one got bought out before the bankruptcy. The rest had to wait for years until someone bought the rights.

However, the next two Tuesdays give me hope... The Omega Man, Soylent Green, The Haunting, Targets and The Thing from Another World are all coming out on dvd....

    it'll all get released eventually.

I'll buy my favorite movies/TV shows on DVD, but I'm not replacing all of my VHS tapes. There are some that I watch, but I'm not too concerned with the quality, so the VHS tape is fine. But then there are others that I can't wait to get on DVD, like Indiana Jones, Star Wars Episodes IV-VI, and some classics (that aren't on DVD yet, or are just being released).

I started replacing all my favourite vhs tapes by making my own DVD versions of them with menus, etc. I did it to learn at first, then for more practice.
I kept up with it because I can only fall asleep with the TV on (bad habit from a very young age). I set the menus to time-out and then replay the movie. No more waking up in the wee hours to the horrible sound of a tape rewinding (ours sounds like a jet taking off!) or waking up to whatever cr@ppola happens to be on tv at 3:00 a.m.
    Works for me. :c)

  16. <===finding copies of this are becoming increasingly difficult to find here in the states. Plus when you CAN find them, the prices are through the roof. I know that the BBC charges an arm and a leg for the licensing rights but the show has been off the air for almost 15 yrs and 1 dvd 3 part story is 25 bucks. I'll still buy them even though they are being released at a snails pace as the VHS versions that I have bought just sound terrible.

isn't George Lucas reediting them again? and even when they get released, he's already said that he considers the new, "Special Editions" the "real" versions.

chances of seeing the original cuts on dvd legitimately = 0%.

I got five more DVDs today in the post and they are replacing the VHS tapes and the LDs.

My movie collection is now almost exclusively DVD.

  21. Who said Star Wars aren't available on DVD? Try doing a search on Google and there are several companies selling the set of 3 films, for instance take a look at http://www.dvdoriginal.com/dvd/showdetail.asp?pid=1235&src=s where a set is selling for $31.99.

I have a set myself that I purchased in the UK where I live.

why do those look suspiciously like bootlegs to me?

if I may ask, what studio released the versions you have?

When will the classic trilogy come out on DVD?
The films of the classic trilogy will eventually come out on DVD, but it won't be this year.

I'll have to second housepig as to the difficulty in obtaining rights to many old films. I remember selling an old RCA tape to a guy in California some years ago. He told me it was for his boss who (apparently) had worked on the film but couldn't find a copy (in L.A. yet!). The rights had been sold off when RCA dissolved the video division and the way they did it was pretty strange, sell 100 here and there apparently at random to various companies, sorta like a grab bag. In turn, those companies may have sold the rights to others ad infinitum. So, 20 years later, no one actually knows who has the rights to the films anymore. If you want to look, the lawyers only charge $1,000US/hour to do so. On the other hand, Disney owns the rights to all their product but many old 50's and 60's classics STILL aren't coming out on any format. BUT...they are the rights holders and can do ANYTHING they want with their films. Oh yes, and it's a common misconception that when you buy a film on tape/disc, you are owning anything other than the physical disc. ALL Rights to the production are still owned by the copyright holder. You get the right to watch it at home (non public performance). That's it...

So, capping my old out of print movies is the only way to preserve them until they get around (if ever) to a legit release.

  26. Yep, DVD is the way to go!! I have like 500 movies on VHS, but they are just gathering dust. I also have approximately 300 DVDs. And a lot of the classics that I have on VHS, I have and continue to add more to my DVD collection. I was absolutely thrilled when "The Day The Earth Stood Still" came out on DVD. They did a spectacular restoration job with the original footage. This flick joins my SCI-FI classics including: War of the Worlds, Forbidden Planet and the orginal Time Machine (I also have the remake on DVD, but I think the original is better--just my opinion!!).

totally agree. god knows when "The Little Girl Who Lives Down the Lane" with Jodie Foster & Martin Sheen will see the light of day on dvd, or "Let's Scare Jessica To Death"... so I bought copies from eBay and they're on my capture pile...

    @boffo -

is that a D.R. & Quinch reference in your signature?

The films of the classic trilogy will eventually come out on DVD, but it won't be this year.
Which, of course, is a crock.

The "classic" trilogy will never come out on DVD. What will come out on DVD are the tampered-with, so-called "special editions" -- assuming Lucas doesn't decide to screw with them some more, and release the "ultra-super-special editions -- now with 20% more digital eye candy and new, "improved" scenes that totally screw up the character arcs without adding anything to the plot!" instead.

As far as I'm concerned, Lucas can keep his lousy special editions, and I'm keeping my laserdiscs -- which are the real "definitive" editions; it says so right on the box.

(That, BTW, is the option I'm currently pursuing, which isn't on the list: I'm replacing a lot of my old VHS tapes with Laserdisc sets, now that the uber-videophile crowd is ditching all their perfectly good LD's just to buy the same movies all over again on DVD just because DVD is "new" and LD is "old". $100 "Criterion Collection" box sets on eBay for $5? Sure, I'll take me some of that action!)
