  1. A buddy recently gave me a movie recorded as an avi. It will play in Media Player and Divx player. However, I'd rather watch this movie on my tv w/DVD player. Tried to convert it with TMPenc, but all that converts is the audio - video gives a blank screen. I tried working on it in Virtual Dub, but pretty much the same results.

I've read there are different avi. files, how can I tell which one this is and how to convert it. My buddy downloaded it so he really can't help out.

Surely this movie can be converted. Any suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks

To see what codecs are required use gspot software.

try raising your directshow priority in TMPGenc properties. that should eliminate the black video. hope it helps

Most likely it is a bad frame(s) in the stream. If TMPGEnc reaches a frame it cannot decode, it will sometimes continue on with just the audio. Sucks that it does not take the last good frame and duplicate it (if params are set to do it) over the bad frame...

Anyways, use "VirtualDub mp3 freeze" (search the forums here for info) to scan the file and see which frames are bad. That information is then put into a TXT file on the HD for you to see. Then use "AVIDeFreezer" to fix the bad frames. Again, search the forums here for info on AVIDeFreezer and how to use it the right way.

Lastly, VirtualDub can mask the bad areas. This takes the last good frame and duplicate it over the bad (masked) area. Again, search the forums here for info on how to use masking the right way.
Thank You & Have a great Day! :)
