  1. Man am I frustrated. I've been burnig DVD's for months with no problem. Bought some new discs, tried to burn and failed. Popped in an old reliable disc and nothing. It won't read or write any disc. Did some searching and read abot 4x media firmware upgrade. I checked new media and sure enough it's 4X (OK I didn't know enough to pay attention).

Did a few normal things like re-booting. No difference. Flashed to 1.4 firmware. Upgrade shows as done, but no difference.

I now have a rock. Won't read CDs or DVDs let alone write them.

Any help would be enormously appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Robert

  2. If your FW was previously less than FW 1.30 you probably have just fried your Laser. The 103 and 104 had issue recognizing 4X media with old FW and the drive would keep that laser on which would burn the laser out.

You probably have a doorstop now.

What RAAGAAman said. You probably fried your drive. Or, to paraphrase John Cleese:

"BURN"?!? Mate, this drive wouldn't "burn" if you put four million volts through it! 'E's bleedin' demised! 'E's not pinin'! 'E's passed on! This drive is no more! He has ceased to be! 'E's expired and gone to meet 'is maker! 'E's a stiff! Bereft of life, 'e rests in peace! If you hadn't installed 'im in th' case 'e'd be pushing up the daisies! 'Is electronic pulses are now 'istory! 'E's off the twig! 'E's kicked the bucket, 'e's shuffled off 'is mortal coil, run down the curtain and joined the bleedin' choir invisible!! THIS IS AN EX-DRIVE!!

And now for something completely different... 8)
