  1. I plan to transfer several VHS tapes to DVD. Are there any VCR's that don't have copy protection or in which it can be removed, such as in some DVD players? I have heard that some VCR's from China don't have copy protection.

    Thanks

I think some capture cards ignore macrovision. Try capturing to your hard drive and then converting and burning to disk.

  3. I got the Aver EasyDVD for 40 bucks at compusa it ignores macrovision, well at least on my StarZWars trill SpecEd. Well I assume it did as I got no macrovision yuckies showing uo. So, either that or SW doesn't have macrovision, and I doubt that. ZAlso in my experience dazzle products ignore it to, and if I'm not mistaken most ATI cards it can be turned off with a patch or special custome driver.

ProScan VCRs (if you can find one) remove macrovision.

I also have the Aver card which I bought at CompUSA and for the price it's a bargin IMO as it has never dropped a single frame.

  7. Bob- Oh heck yeah its great I use it with WinDVR that de-interlaces on the fly as well as applies a smothing filter on the fly, and I get no dropped frames at all I get beautifull video at all resolutions. I won't replace it till I can afford something on the pro level, there is no need to it's as good as alot of the $300 mpeg2 capture cards quality as I've seen.

When you see a post in this forum section, You know it's either going to be a "miracle" or it's a topic that has been misplaced such as discussing DVD Writers rather than recorders. Stop teasing me guys.

Here is your best bet for removing macrovision cheaply and effectively:

    http://www.simacorp.com/products/item.ep.html?session=7d56ca56b4716abd757fe9f9ca1444fe&id=386

I got mine about four years ago for around $40us. Never a problem since. It works with any video signal, from rca jacks or s-video. VCR/DVD, it supplies clean signal. Good Luck!

  12. Yes the Sima Color Corrector works well to clean up video pictures and someone told me it might remove unwanted signals but I don't own one myself
Panasonic DMR-ES45VS, keep those discs a burnin'

The Sima does work well, however, it mostly does well with VHS. DVD will work, but it won't look as good as the VHS. I don't know why. But as your topic states, you will only need to worry about VHS, so this is good. I have seen it as low as $34.99 on the internet. It's the best buy for your money though.

  14. Erwin,

Thanks for the info. I was thinking there might be some way to "fix" a vcr, like people do with DVD players.

  15. I have a bunch of old video tapes of football games and such that I want to preserve ... can you tell me if this would be a good product to improve the quality of the DVD's I burn when copying the tapes? In addition to defeating macrovision, it also amplifies the video and audio signal for regular duplicating, right?

Also, slightly off topic, I have about 6 devices that I want to be able to pass cable signals between. Would putting this at the beginning of the chain amplify the cable signal so there wouldn't be as much deterioration by the time it gets to the end of the chain?

some vcr have more macrovision implementation than others. never use a jvc for example to capture. goldstar (i don't know if they still exist) was one company that did not put macrovision on their vcrs

i threw my old macrovision eliminator ($20.00 from part express) away when laserdisc came out

but i still kicking myself in the butte for not keeping it (dvd used the same technology for copy protection)

and the aver dvd does not eliminate macrovision as some dvd players i use to capture have it implemented and the picture show it.

    Removes Macrovision?
Try JVC SVHS VCRs, TBC's, and even that Sima device.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

The SIMA device works ok for DvD, but it's usually best to rip if possible. It will "kinda" clean up older tapes, but not to any real appreciable degree. A better vcr will often help old tapes, or even a good professional head cleaning.

i would take the sima thing back and spend that $50 on a cheap dvd player or vcr that doesn't have macrovision on it

a lot of companies aren't even bothering to implement macrovision these days to cut costs on the player

  24. You may want to investigate a Time Base Corrector. When the video signal is passed through the TBC it almost always overrides the Macrovision. This could be a good time in history to pick up a used TBC for cheap from a videotape dub house.

  25. I have the Sharp VC-A582 4heah 360Xhigh speed rewind model and have had no macro problem of any kind recording to a Apex DRX-9000, I have recorder 6 diffrent movies from Tape to DVD so far and no problems. Just make sure you update the firmware on the Apex to solve the problem that others seemed to have had when recording from VCR to DVD Recorder.
