  1. Hi all,

Just a simple question. I've just realised that my DVD player (Conia M530) doesn't like authored DVDRs that exceed 4.0G. Conia players lets you explore ISO and UDF-burnt DVDRs and shows these files as media file which you can press play to. Instead of showing the file as a playable media file they are registered as folders whereupon when you click on them it crashes the player.

Anyone know of a player that gives you the explorer-like function but readily accepts DVDRs that exceeds 4.0G? Prefereably a player that can read a DVDR to its maximum, eg 4.3G..

    Cheers,

  2. it might be the way they are burnt or authored.
i know on my dvd players,NERO is a bitch,as nothing works near the end of movies.
like the last couple of chapters will skip till the end, super quick.
try another piece of software to burn them, like copytodvd,or any of the others.
    IMO,NERO,just doesnt close them right.
    my equipment --
    PS2
    LG 5620 home theatre system.
    schneider 1003 dvd player.
they all have problems, and my pc dvd rom has problem reading files, that have been burnt using nero, over 4gig.
i now use copytodvd and its fine.

Both of you gentlemen's problems are with the media you are using - not the player, or the burning software (or the authoring package).

Considering that a DVD reads data from a disk at a constant 26.16Mbps, the decoder in the player doesn't know the beginning of the disk from the end. Also, NERO is just burning what you have asked it to burn (or, do you subscribe to the rumor that the folks at NERO are deliberately sabotaging your efforts above 4.0GB?).

Perhaps if you posted your preferred media brand, you'll find that other people have had identical problems with your brand.

As a post script, I routinely burn disks greater than 4,700,000,000 bytes, and never have a playback issue (total capacity of a DVD-R is 4,706,XXX,XXX bytes). NERO is my burning software. I am using Verbatim Datalife Plus disks. But then, that's just my experiences.

  4. Hi,

Thank you both for the response. I didn't arrive at this conclusion overnight I think it was naive of me to state a specific point for failure (eg. 4.0G) but I've tested numerous media including Ritek, Princo and Imation. All are - media. I've also tried both RecordNow Max and Nero and they both produced the same problem. Everything runs fine around 3.7G and 3.8G (I did this a few times with a few files) but when its around 4.1 or 4.2G it gives me the problems as stated earlier. In any case, everything works perfectly on the PC-DVDROM.

I know for a certainty that the Imation is a media that my Conia player does not like. It works but there is a lot of stuttering from beginning to end. Both Princo and Ritek works pretty well when it is under the threshold. But a couple of files that goes to 4.1 or 4.2G gives me folders for file.

SLK, could you please post what DVD player you have. That is mainly what I was originally after - a player which (through your experiences) did not have the problems i encountered.

MeTaLgEaRsOoTy, wow what brand is Schneider - I've never heard of that one. I'll give copytodvd a go to see if there's any luck there.

  6. ive tried ritek,memorex,tdk,cheap unbranded,rewritables..blah..blah..
i always have problems with NERO,a few versions of it..
    but like i say,dvd decrypter,dvd2one,and copytodvd work..everytime.
so its not the media, more the crappy nero burning rom.

the schneider 1003,is available at asda stores for £48.75.
its also made by the same people who make the pacific 1002,dansai dvd players, alba dvd players,a high proportion of goodmans dvd players, roadstar 114/119 player, and alba 114,119 dvd players.
but IMO,its the best one,as it doesnt have these crappy glitches that the others do,like the alba, and roadstar..
and before i get flamed..ive had over 20 of these assorted dvd players, and the only one i thought was worth my money was the schneider 1003,as it didnt have ghosting on the scart lead, didnt skip on svcds, plays all my discs, and plays dvd-mp3s no problem at all.
and it cant just be me,as like i said before, asda have tons of the pacifics back, and argos have a high proportion of the albas and roadstars back as well..
one guy told me on the helpline, that"we cant tell out customers they are faulty,if we did that then we wouldnt sell any of them.if they find a prolem we will replace or refund it..."
but what i cant get is why not repair them....they must be faulty..
