Hi,
While I convert my AVI movie file to VCD with TMPGEnc, I have to choose between the Interlace and Non-Interlace video types (the default option suggested by TMPGEnc is Interlace with the "Bottom field first" field order).
I've read guides and glossaries as well as a topic "Interlace vs. Non-Interlace" on this forum. However, the right choice is still not obvious for me.
I capture video from a Sony DV camcorder into Microsoft AVI - Open DML files with the attributes:
29.970 FPS, data rate 3512.11 Kbps,
Video: 24 bits, 720x480
Audio: 48.000 kHz, 16 Bit, stereo.
My goal is to create NTSC VCD to be played on a stand-alone DVD player attached to a usual TV set.
Could you please tell me what option I should choose in my particular situation?
Thanks,
Lev

Since the final product is normal TV, leave it in interlace.
Hello. -
Interlaced only really matters if the output will be interlaced, or if you can gain some added benifit ( see IVTC ).
When you output to VCD it's 240 scanlines and therefore it's only 1 field and non-interlaced ( that 1 field is repeated twice to get the full 480 scanlines for NTSC ). So your choice really does not matter. If you were going to mpeg-2 ( svcd / dvd ) then interlacing would matter and you would need to know things like field dominence and other interlacing things.
The one exception is telecined materal because with the interlacing intact you can recover the original 24fps video which will compress better ( fewer frames, better matching, no blurring, ... ). The process is called inverse telecine or IVTC for short.
