Ok so I've been encountering this problem. When I watch a dvd (usually something animated) and there is an action scene, the picture gets these horizontal lines. These happens with original dvd's as well as burned ones. I read this article http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/capture/understandsource.htm#interlace thinking it would help but I didn't really understand it.

My dvd player is a Philips dvp 5960 and it's connected using hdmi to my Toshiba lcd. I'm not sure if it has anything to do with the hdmi or the progressive scan but it's really annoying. Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Whilst I am not sure exactly what the problem is, in my experience when I have reversed the interlacing the problem is not so much horizontal lines but a flicker of the image which is really prominent when there is movement.

As it is happening on your originals it would not be inversed interlacing (upper instead of lowerfield first) but maybe there is something between the progressive/interlace tv to player I dont know.

Is this "Toshiba lcd" a TV or a computer monitor?

What are your output settings from the 5960? interlace/progressive

These are commercial or home made DVD discs? Do all commercial DVD titles do this?

    My Toshiba is a tv.

I'm not sure what my settings are? I think the dvd player automatically sets them.

This happens with commercial dvds. Some are worse then others. For example my Venture Bros. dvd's it is not that common or bad. However the other day I was watching Witchblade and it was very prominent during the action scenes. I was thinking it might have something to do with the HDMI, this evening I am going to try using a different connection and see if that does anything.

You should have format options for HDMI. It probabbly defaults to 480i or 1080i. Try 480p or 720p.

Also upscale is probably switched off for commercial DVD over HDMI.

As an alternate, try 480p over analog component. That puts the deinterlace load on the player.
