  1. Im just curious since i only have an analog video cam capturing through an tvtuner..

Is DV camera capturing through firewire captures faster? I mean isnt it should be the length (time) of video equals to the length of capture.

I ask this because this moronic friend of mine is claiming that its faster but i think he's lying..

can someone pls tell me whats the truth..

    thx

  2. No it's not faster. You can't capture a movie any faster to you PC through a Firewire than a regular capture card.

But, you can move more information at one time.

    EX:
Capture cards are system dependant so, with a slow system you can only capture at a low resolution.

But, with the Camera... the camera does most of the work so you can cap at high resolutions.

I would go into more detail but, some of us have to goto work.
Don't give in to DVD2ONE, that leads to the dark side.

Firewire doesn't "capture" video, it's just a transfer between your tape and your harddrive. Compression is done in the camera while you shoot or do a pass-through. 1 hour of video takes 1 hour to transfer...
But it is fast! I mean, it transfers a LOT of data, 1 hour of video = 13 GB

What format is the data when you transfer it from camera to the computer? Will this allow a transfer of an exact copy of what is on the tape (no quality loss)?

If it's DV, it's the same format as the tape. The conversion to DV is done inside the DCR (as said before).
If you use a DV converter (anything to DV), it's obviously a different format (like analog tape to DV).

DV is considered an AVI, right? Therefore, I can use TMPGEnc to encode it to mpg-1/2, rigth?

This is what i gather... Using a firewire is a better way to go than using a capture card? The firewire will allow the best possible quality?
