  1. I've been working with my new Adaptec VideOH! PCI capture card for two weeks now and I'm generally quite pleased with it. However, I'm still uncertain why some DVD Authoring programs I want to use won't open the MPEG2 files I create?

Am I correct in assuming that, since my card is a 'real time' capture card and MPEG2 encoder, that I should be able to capture my VHS tapes to MPEG2 files, WITHOUT having to run them through TMPGEnc? I don't want to, becuase the quality of the initial captures it quite good, considering the source is VHS.

I believe a couple times I was able to author the files directly - Ulead MF v.1 opened them up, but 2 won't. But sometimes, other programs like TMPGEnc DVD Author, will freeze when I try to open the files. It's always something.

I'd like to hear your opinions, ideas, comments, etc.

some authoring software is pickier than others.

I have files that are imported and burned without problems in DVD Lab or NeoDVD, but Sonic ReelDVD won't touch them... it says they "aren't compliant".

I would try another authoring application or two, and if they consistently reject your files, take a deeper look at our encoding settings.

  3. Thanks housepig. So fart I've gone through a number of different authoring programs. DVD Lab is WAY to advanced for my needs. I really like how Ulead walks you through everything; it's very user friendly.

Of the programs you recommended, I was able to author a dvd using DVD Complete - however, I first had to de-multiplex the mpeg2 file using TMPGEnc (when DVD complete tried to do that, it only got the first 3 seconds of the video), but then the final product had out of sync audio and video.

It seems like since I started tinkdering with Movie Mills color settings when I captured, my problem with authoring software not opening my MPEG2 files has gotten worse. Looks like it's back to the old drawing board for me...

  5. SHS, yes, that's my card. I've tried both Ulead Movie Factory 1 and 2. Sometimes, 1 would work for me, but 2 is much worse - when I get to the 'finish' stage of production, the proram will freeze, and I have to reboot my system.

  7. There is something peculiar about my system that is doing this. I installed Ulead DVD Movie Factory on my Mom's computer, and it worked fine. Unfortunately, her computer only has 1 GB of HD left of a 10 GB HD, 62 MB of RAM and a 700 MHz processsor. Otherwise, I'd just user her computer for authoring. I MUST FIGURE OUT WHY MY COMPUTER IS DOING THIS, AND THEN FIX IT!

  8. Last night I was able to author some files from an captured MPEG2 file that came out perfect. Today, I captured more with the exact same settings, and the audio/video were out of synch

  9. Maybe this will apply. I have a Pinnacle Moviebox USB that encodes mpg2 realtime. It stays in sync real good if you use the "high quality dvd " setting. If you use "custom mpg2" setting and adj the bitrate to change the file size the sync goes all to hell. I also use Movie Factory 1 to author to a "video ts" file and burn with Nero Express with much ease and success. So far I have captured and authored a 103 min movie without changing bitrate or rencoding and there is room for a little more. I have much better luck with sync issues if I forget about the chapters and menus and just do the movie in one continuous file. .... harrymj3

  10. Thanks for the tip. That is something I've also considered. Movie Mill has a standard MPEG2 setting where you can adjust the bit rate, but you can also do a 'custom' setting. I'll try using the default high quality. I do, however, need to add chapters and menus, since I'm putting multiple shows on one disc - Da Ali G Show - Hilarious!

  11. Try using winMPG convert to convert your mpeg2's to DVD compliant mpeg2
