    what are the best freeware programs to convert dvd to vcd
    i have used smart ripper - dvd2avi - tmpgenc - vcdeasy .
    any other ideas........

    Those are the ones I use, I don't think you can get much better but some people have different preferences (like DVDecrypter or Cinemacraft Encoder).

    Edit: Oops, CCE is not free and I don't think it does VCD (mpeg).

    ripper: smartripper, dvddecryptor

    frameserver: dvd2avi, flaskmpeg (i use for subs and also for seamless branching movies, i.e. ID4), and vdub (w/ vobsub for subs)

    encoder: tmpgenc, cce



    also, some front end proggies...maybe just for SVCD...
