  1. I currently use DVD Decryptor and Instant Copy to backup DVD-9 to regular DVD. However I'm finding out that I hate the fbi/interpol notices that you can't skip and extra useless video clips/previews. If I could remove those I could make more room for the main video plus menu.

**Instant copy will only let me reduce quality to 30% and WILL NOT let me exclude these gosh darn notices and other useless extras (such as previews and upcoming releases).

**SUPPOSEDLY ifoEDIT will let me do this but frankly you need an MBA in Video Editing to understand how.

**I WANT to keep the original menus so using DVD2ONE to copy just the main files doesn't suffice.

**I KNOW there must be a way because I've seen 'released' dvd images where the groups take out that extra stuff (ie. Shanghai Knights doesn't have the outtakes but everything else seems there)

**I tried DVDShrink and I couldn't figure out how to EXCLUDE things...only how to make them slide show presentation. Plus the video quality didn't seem as good as Instant Copy (and you couldn't adjust it to any % you want).

Is there a SIMPLE NEWB guide to doing this?

Thanks in advance for helping me. I have two images on my HDD and want to try them on it.

  2. Easiest and best are subjective terms. IMHO IFOEdit is the best choice. It's really not that hard once you learn how it works, but you do need to understand the DVD file structure and command structure. That is it's not a 'hand holding' program.

DVD Toolbox is another good choice. It gives you about as much control as IFOEdit but has a much more user friendly GUI.

DVD Shrink is the easiest choice. To deselect a titleset/video/audio/subs just uncheck it. Set everything you want to keep to 'no compression' then generate a new VIDEO_TS folder.

You can then either burn directly, or run it through DVD2One, IC (or just compress in DVD Shrink when you de-selected unwanted material).

  3. I just tried DVD Shrink. It won't let me deselect the extras in 'full disk' mode. I can do the re-author mode but then it doesn't keep the original menu structure (everything ripped out will just play in sequence).

I want to keep the menus as they originally are. Dvd toolbox (also called DVDFab?) I am trying right now but I don't know what to do. Anyone have ideas or suggestions? Thanks.

The easiest way is with IFOedit and Vobrator. Just follow this guide, http://www.doom9.org/mpg/ifoedit-basic.htm

Using IFOEdit to strip items should only be done when the items are at the very beginning of the disk, ie: warnings, otherwise the disk structure gets messed up.

  5. well...you may not need any extra proggies if you don't mind still having those FBI warnings there, but just being able to fast forward throu them...

in dvddecryptor, you can goto options and under file mode, you can ask dvddecryptor to remove "PUO" or prohibited user operations...once they're removed, you should be able to fast forward throu anything....

again, like i said...fbi warnings still there...but now, less inconvient

Believe it or not, I think I was able to rip out the extras finally using that guide. (I used Power DVD to play it and everything seemed to work fine) Now I was hoping to use Instant Copy to downgrade the video. But when I use Instant Copy it gives me :
"LIST INDEX OUT OF BOUNDS (2)"

Anyone know if I am able to use Instant Copy after using ifoedit to remove stuff? Do I need to use TMPG then?

Thanks for all your help. And thanks for the tip about fast forwarding through the fbi warnings.

Alot of the transcoders are unable to process DVDs if you alter them even slightly. Just do all of your transcoding first, and strip the warnings out in the very end. The warnings take up less than 1MB so its not like its going to throw off your target file size.

    I agree with adam.
If the warnings are at beginning of disk (video_ts.vob file) then just use vobrater to find out which vob id you want to remove and then use IFOedit. I haven't looked at linked guide but I must have learned somewhere.
If the warnings are in separate title set then the easiest way is to remove with IC. You can also use IFOedit but it is more complicated.
I have found the warnings in many different places and depending on location and size of disk and features is how I decide what to use.
Easiest way to remove extra features and keep original menu is IC.
You are right about dvdshrink......it would be nice feature if it could completely remove titles.....but it doesn't. The interface and quick playability is much better than IC...IMO.

    Hope this helps...

IC = Instant Copy right? I don't see how you can completely rip out extras *and* keep the original menu with Instant Copy. Do I have the right version?

I guess the moral of the story is to transcode first then rip out.

Actually no....that is not the moral always.
IC does = Instant Copy and the version doesn't really matter too much but you do need the registry hacks. Go to Mrbass website he has them there. It will allow you remove title sets and other things as well.
