  1. I burned a DVD with Nero Express and in the resulting movie the sound is very much out of synch, several minutes.
This is strangely not the case in the original mpeg which is absolutely flawless in this aspect.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Did you author the MPEG in a reel DVD Authoring program or did you let Nero Attempt to convert the MPEG to a VOB?

I have had some problems with Nero converting files, so I only use Nero to burn Data DVDs or to Burn Video DVDs that have been authored in a real Authoring program. Right now my favorite is DVD-Lab. but don't get version 1.2.1 beta it is unstable. Grab 1.15 or 1.2.0.

I used to use it to do VCD and SVCD.
I must admit that I have not tried it for DVDs.

I have tried the Ulead Products (DVD Workshop and Movie Factory2), the low end Sonic products (My DVD and DVDiT) and TMPGEnc DVD Author.

But I settled on Media Chance's DVD-Lab, you can grab the 30 day trial from the tools area. BUT do not get the 1.2.1 beta, it is not stable.
