  1. Just wondering on opinions for the new Macintsosh G5 announced today.
I'll have to say that this is by far one of the most impressive things Apple has done, and probably their best chance at getting back in the game.

Do you guys think it's going to do well, or not really help their already staggering numbers?

I would have to say that I would like to see Apple succeed a little bit, after all I was once a Mac person 8)

    Check out http://www.apple.com for specs.

The FSB speed is insane. I think it's going to be a powerful platform, especiall the dual 2.0Ghz machines. Again, price will keep me from buying apple, though.

I'm also waiting to see how the AMD Opterons will perform after they've been out for a while.

I sleep during the day so I'm seeing it for the first time. One click to apples site and suddenly I'm filled with desire! I need a plan to get about $2500 stat!

  4. Apple makes cool computers. They just need now to lower their prices.

Oh dear, I didn't think we were that close to the G5 release! I guess I have a change in plans. No second dual Athlon machine, hello dual 2GHz G5 machine. I bet you can encode like the dickens on that thing. Now I just hope Adobe offers Encore for the Mac when it comes out later this summer.

Anyone wanna buy 2 Athlon MP 1900+ CPUs?

  6. It looks nice, but thats what Mac does. They make cool looking computers.

As far as speed, well it looks alittle slow. I mean just a gig FSB, thats just pathetic

I still think they are too exspensive. The good in this is they might drop the price of the G4's to a reasonable price.

Expensive??? I thought the price looked good. Especially after looking at other computers at my school. Plus the fact that the G5s cost less than the G4s. I'll be getting one asap.....or perhaps I'll wait for the dual 3.0GHz...

  8. tgpo m8- i know that apples are much more efficient clock for clock speed than amd & p4 (a similar way that amd are more fficient that pentium) but i was just interested as to the extent that this is so?

for instance, how fast is your apple and how fast does it encode with cce?

how fast would a typical apple system have to be in order to compete with a P4 or a 3000? (roughly)
1)Why Not Overclock a little?! speed 4 free!!!!
    2) If your question has anything to do with copying PS2/PC/XBox games, find a more appropriate website

    I have only a 450mhz

    There isn't a mac version of CCE.....sorry.

I thought the prices were really great for a 64-bit processor. Look at what the equivalent Opterons cost and then include a mobo with 8x AGP and PCI-X, RAM, and all the rest built in and $3000 isn't so bad.

A good way to benchmark the Apple vs a PC processor system would be to use Cleaner or Premiere to encode something. Maybe we should set up a benchmarking test for those of us with access to these apps and some different machines? I'd really like to see just how powerful those G5s can be.

a dual Opteron complete system starts at $2,344.00 with a nvidia quadro video card and pc2700 ECC DDR memory -

  13. tgpo & donny- my mistake, i just assumed cce would work with an apple.

so, do you know roughly what speed an apple would have to be to compete with say a 200+/2GHz P4 (just outta interest!)

  14. Check out the link...

The G5 dual 2Ghz rated slightly faster than the dual 3.06GHz Xeon processor and it crushed a 3Ghz P4 single processor set up (which is to be expected) according to apple's testing.

Of course, I'd have to point out that this testing would be somewhat less than objective, but it does present a comparison for you.
It's the little things.... a smile, a nod of incouragement, a punch in the head... that really make a difference to those around you.

they didnt have sse2 enabled on the intels in this test - also they didnt use optimised compiliers ... "slightly" flawed tests ... its going to be a good machine (the mac) .

It really depends on a lot of independent things you cant just say a 1gz machine will be equal to the 100+/2ghz p4.

maybe it is in aspect of a photoshop rendering or a encoding, but it may be way slower or way faster for other things.

If you want to know for certain things, post your speeds for stuff thats cross compatible....

Here are my speeds on a a dual 1.25 ghz G4, 1gb ddram for dvd2one (one app i can think of that a lot of pc and mac users are using lately)

Movie only copy of a dvd backup (7.4gb to 4.4) is ~12 min
Disk copy is ~25 min for same movie

This is in my default processor preference mode. I can increase the preference of this app for both processors with a shareware app and the speeds decrease by maybe a few min for both.

let me know your speeds for this app and we can see how a dual 1.25 ghz mac stacks up for just this application.
