The Sony drive is known to have problems burning the Ritek G03 2x media at 2x. It could be having the same problems with the 4x media.

I'm thinking about getting an A06 for my second PC, mainly because the Sony seems so finicky about -R media (works great with all the +R's I've tried though). Plus I think the Pioneer drives come in black faceplate versions, to match my case .

  5. it's hopeless ...trust me. Your best bet is to go get tdk, memorex, verbatim o r sony 4X DVD+R at bestbuy.com or walk in and get them. Then you'll be in 4X burning heaven.

  6. I agree with spiderman2k1:try an ATA66 IDE cable and connect the drive as Master and make sure DMA is enabled. Also make sure the media is actually G04(use Nero infotool or CDspeed to verify),some online shops are notorious for advertising G04(4x) and sending you G03(2x).

  7. I burn the Ritek 4x on my 500ax at 4x all the time. The thing is I didn't flash my drive which I learned from my Sony DRU500a kills the 4x burning of the drive.

Keep in mind that the new Sony firmware might be defaulting to lower speeds on some media for a reason: to give better, more error-free burns. It would be interesting to run some media through the Sony w/old and new firmware, and see what error rates are reported by Kprobe.

  10. put it this way...if it burns at 4X then it'll burn at 4X. If it won't then it won't. My first 100 pack would burn at 4X but my second 100 pack would only burn at 2X.
Both packs were Ritek G04 4X bought from rima.com. So some say they can and some say they can't guess it's the luck of the draw of which media you get. I've spent more hours than I care to admit thinking I was doing something wrong. Try every single sony firmware released, etc. I've just gonna stick with DVD+R from bestbuy.

  11. Did you verify that the media with DVD INFO?

I am curious wether the information on the 4x discs was exactly the same as the ones that could only work well at 2x.

I am having the same problem, but withsony 510a. It will not write at 4x, I have tries 3 different media and will only write at 2x for -r and 2.4 for +r.

Using dvdshrink and copytodvd to burn. Could this software be the problem? Is there a better burning software?

Where do I find firmware for the sony and how do I flash???

Pardon the ignorance I am new to this.

    I burned 10 Princo DVD-R 4x without one problem at 4x (~15mins), even on-the-fly I could burn 4x without buffer problems.

Your DVD-writer should be Master and not Slave on IDE2.

I'm using the original 1.0d firmware, don't see a reason in upgrading yet.
