  1. hi, just installed my new sony dru500ax recorder, i didn't get any hint on the best ide connection, so i installed it as secondary master on secondary ide channel with a normal 40 pin cable, leaving as secondary slave the dvd-rom.
i've recorded a dvd of home footage with ulead dmf2 on the +rw disc provided with the writer (result ok), then same movie on a princo -r disc (result ok), os win98.
when i've tried to restart the pc i got a blue screen with a long error message, i had to shut down manually.
i went then under winxp, recorded a blank cd-r at 24x (result ok) but then again when I've tried to shut down i got a terrible blue screen.
it seems it happens only after doing some recording.
    does anybody have any hint?
    thanks.

Don't know a direct solution, but try updating some things, http://sony.storagesupport.com/cdrw/qs_winxp.htm#sw

PS: I'd put DVDWriter as master on IDE2 and your DVDROM slave on IDE1. Both work tho, but the other way is better

Well, changing the connections won't solve your problem I think.
IF you want to copy on the fly it's better if your Writer and Reader are on different IDE ports. Otherwise all reading and writing data has to be processed by one IDE port.
It's less stressy if you could use 2

  6. Windows XP (and windows 2000) sometime have some problem with software and driver for "removable" drive. This is My case with my curent installation of Windows 2000. As soon as I enter a DVD-RW, CD-RW or DVD-RAM drive (or even a compact flash card reader) PC got a blue screen.

Which software do you use to burn ? to you have anything like force aspi or did you install any driver for your DVD burner ? Drivers are unneeded and may cos this kind of problem

I once had a problem with a "driver" which wouldn't remove and gave me errors at each startup, etc...

I deleted it manually, but the problem persisted.
    Here's what I did:

Disable the System Restore function, it 'll remove all the info/data in the System Volume Information folder.
Do not let Windows shut down itself, but hit the power button and do a cold start.
(When Windows shuts down normal it does all sort of things)

After this the problem was gone (and I enabled back System Restore), never got a problem since.
