should it take as long as 31 mins

I have a 2X drive and burn my dvd in 23 to 27 minutes.. so no 4X don'T take 31minute (you got some problem with buffer)

It should take 15 to 16 minutes, if i remember correctly DRU500's are very picky on the media they like for 4x burning.

My suggestion is to change your media, and possibly update your firmware if necessary.

I have a 500AX, and when I have 4x media that the burner likes, it takes 15 minutes.

mostly though I end up with 2x at about 30 minutes - I'll wait until the media cost drops further before I worry about speed.

Sony 500a same firmware as you 4x media (Full DVD) takes approx 15 minutes on +R

Your time sounds like 2X times.

I only use brand name 4X and they work fine at 4X...

I get the Verbatin 4X +Rs at best buy locally @ $29.99 for a 15 piece spindle.

in fact it's slower than 2X... here why I belive it's a buffer problem (ultra dma ?)

media is RITEK 4X and have tried some more but still get same speed
I know there have been problems with this drive before as seen on various sites but i thought that the firmware updates fixed all this..
Does anyone know how to fix this
