  1. Buying a Sony this weekend but I am not sure which one? I can get the DWU10a much cheaper than the 510 but for the price difference what am I losing? The 510 must have something the DWu does not?

I have the oem version (dwu10a).

It is brilliant. I have not flashed the firmware, still on 1.1a.
Only burned a couple of costers, which were my fault.

Having troubles finding media to burn at 4 speed in the UK at the reasonable price.

It works with nero and recordnow.

Why spend more on the same drive basically for software which many on the forum say is rubbish.

  3. So are the drives the same but the software is different?

  4. DW-U10A = OEM version of DRU-500A.

    DRU-510A vs. DRU-500A:
    4x vs. 2.4x DVD+RW,
    16x vs. 10x CD-RW,
    12x vs. 8x DVD-ROM

  5. so basically the OEM has no difference concerning speed, it just comes without the software. i am correct in saying that?

  6. Dave,

    Read -jsl-'s post above:

    4x DVD+RW (DRU-510A) vs. 2.4x DVD+RW (DW-U10A)
    16x CD-RW (DRU-510A) vs. 10x CD-RW (DW-U10A)
    12x DVD-ROM (DRU-510A) vs. 8x DVD-ROM (DW-U10A)

So there is a difference in speed.

  7. That is incorrect because i have rung four suppliers in the UK and all of them have told me that the U10A is no different to the 510A in speed and spec, the only different is that the 510A comes with the burning software, packed and in a silver case with a fancy sony logo front. The U10A is cased in a standard pc colour casing, which I prefer because it matches my pc tower. So i have bought it today for £170, £100 cheaper than the 510A.

  8. All your suppliers were unfortunately wrong because the DW-U10A is the OEM version of the DRU-500A. The OEM version of the DRU-510A is called DW-U14A.

  9. hi jsl

So does the DW-U14A have the exact same specs as the 510A then? I can give it back that would not be a problem. Is this a very new version because nobody from the shops mentioned about this version?

    thanks for that mate

  10. Yes the DW-U14A has exactly the same specifications as the DRU-510a. But I don't think it's available outside Japan yet (where it's sold by Buffalo as the DVM-4244FB.
