HELP! ***Errors Converting AVI == MPG***

Help!!! I have been trying for days to convert a .avi movie to mpg so I can burn it but have had no luck. I have loaded all DivX codecs and have attempted to use every encoder known to man. In Tmpeg In receive an error stating "the file [NAME OF FILE] can not open or unsupported". The files opens fine and can be viewd but not converted. In AVI2VCD I get an error stating that the source video uses compressed audio! AVI2MPG cannotI dont know where to turn. I have read all other posts and still cannot get this to work. NOTE: It is not all files, for instance, I received a file that was part of a set and the first file worked where the second failed. Please, HELP!!!
