  1. What does everyone target for their output disk size? I target 4.38G.

Please, sound off and don't just look.

  2. your question is a little bland, as everyone uses different methods. If you are trying to get 4.38 GB's in your output constantly....the times you do get that file size....you are gonna have more problems then you had hoped for. It's pretty simple..being that a DVD blank has a capacity of equal or less then 4.37 GB's..... 4.38 is too high.

You don't want to be too conservative either...I personally get my output between 4.32 & 4.35 GB's each and every time! I think I had one movie which totalled 4.37 GB's, and it was actually a DVD-5....it was the NTSC version of "MONEY TALKS" and it burned and plays perfectly on my ACCU/SONY media.

Actually, a disc can hold up to about 4.39 GB, more or less, with overburning. But the spec calls for about 4.38, there's an exact calculation that was posted here by an engineer a while back, comparing bytes to bits to gigabytes, didn't bookmark it, ya'll can go search for it.

But target size? Shoot for about 4.0 GB if using cheaper media. Fill it up to about 4.3 GB on good media.

And yeah, gotta agree with defense, this isn't the greatest question, as this newbie question/answer can be found in guides, posts, etc., all over the site.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

When I use DVD2ONE I use a setting of 4350MB which is a good 100MB or so less than full capacity but I've never had a problem with disc playback but I've heard other people have (when you try to "push" to close to the limit).

If I'm encoding something with TMPGEnc then I try for something between 3.9GB to 4.0GB leaning toward the 4.0GB

I don't like to go over 4.0GB so I know I have room for menu designs and all that stuff and still not be too close to the limit.

I wasn't referring to "overburning"...I was referring to the question that was asked..which was what the output target should be. I was aware overburning could get about 4.38 GB's of data...however, i've never heard of getting 4.39 GB's of data on a DVD burn.

I don't doubt it "COULD" be done....but it would be pretty stupid as even anything over 4 GB's on a lot of media will cause issues towards the ends.....trying to fit 4.39 GB's, is just throwing your money out the window...however, if you host many big parties....then you can always use them as creative coasters....maybe put that old "45" lp sticker on those bad boys and serve up the drinks!

  6. This is a little different than I expected.

First I did look around the site and could not find an exceptable answer to the actual size and/or what people target.

I am somewhat new but have almost 100 burns under my belt so I'm at least on the right track.

FYI, I have been targeting 4.38G for all those movies; some using dvd2one where I customized the output size to that number. I'm trying to think if I've watched them all to the end.

Sounds like I should pull back or risk missing the end of the movie. Sounds like 4.32 up to 4.35?

FYI I have been using Retek for all of my work.

  7. Blank DVD-R 4,489MB 4,706,074,624 bytes or 4.383GB
    Blank DVD+R 4,483MB 4,700,372,992 bytes or 4.377GB

One time I tried to copy a dvd-r to dvd+r and was ticked cuz it said not enough space on target...I was like what so I did a little investigating and this is what I got at least on my media.

  8. Thanks mrbass.

I use dvd-r and from the looks of it, I've been lucky as to my results.

FYI, I've kept a few of your guides. The IC7 one came in handy. I still refer to it to make sure that I have the settings or when I need a link. Thanks for the work.
