Hi!
I've followed the guide here on how to convert a divx file to DVd and then burn it with Nero. The problem is that the resulting DVD is not recognized by my standalone dvd player, although it (Philips DVD722) according to the compatibility list supports dvd+r/+rw.
Before burning it, I created a folder(VIDEO_TS ) in which I simply put the mpeg file, I choose Dvd-rom(Udf) and UDF 1.02 and then dragged the VIDEO_TS folder(containing only the mpeg file) into Nero and burnt it.
What did I do wrong?
I'd be grateful for an answer.

unless your player will play raw mpeg files, this won't work.
You need to take your mpeg and import it into an authoring program, and author the dvd.
After the dvd is authored, you take the output files (.ifo and .vob) and put them in the VIDEO_TS folder, then burn it.
check the Author programs in the Tools section at left. Most have trial versions you can download and check out. I like DVD Lab myself.- housepig

I'm surprised that the guide I followed said nothing about authoring the mpeg file.
Is it pretty straightforward authoring the mpeg file or is it necessary following some kind of guide.

I've now got a demo version of dvd lab, but how do I author my mpeg file.
I've started the software but I dont quite know what to do.

Import your movie as an asset.
If it is a dvd-compliant file, you don't need to demux. If it's not a dvd-compliant file and you don't demux, you will end up with an unplayable project when you're done, so if you have any doubts, demux.
Once your files have been imported, drag the mpeg (or the audio and video streams) into Movie 1.
On Menu 1, make a text button that says "Play" (or whatever). Once you have a button, drag Movie 1 to the button to link to it.
Compile your project. Test it in a software dvd player (such as PowerDVD)before you burn, to make sure you don't have any problems.
Check the help file in DVD Lab if you have questions - follow the tutorial. All the basics are covered pretty well.
If you have specific questions, post 'em and I'll try to respond.- housepig
