  1. I am trying to create a xVCD to fit onto an 80min CD. I used a bitrate calc to establish that a video bitrate of 1050 and an audio bitrate of 224Kbits/s would fit onto 1 x 80min CD. The movie is 83mins 12sec in length.

Using TMPEGEnc v12a along with Sefy's template 'SeVCD for PAL Enhanced.mcf' with the folowing settings ...
    Video: Automatic VBR (CQ_VBR) 1050
    Audio: 44100Hz 224Kbits/s
the encoded mpg file was 774,801KB in size, so far so good, with the ratio of 10MB per minute the above file should fit on an 80min CD.

I used VCDImager Easy v1.0.0 to create a bin/cue image, but the resulting image file was 892,270KB in size and could not be burned using CDRWin to an 80min CD. I then tried Nero v5.5.4.0, attempting to create a non standard VCD using the 774,801KB mpg file, this created a time line in excess of 91mins which again could not be burnt to an 80min CD.

Has anybody struck this problem ? or have I overlooked something simple along the way.

VCDImager and its associated GUIs do not like nonstandard (S)VCD streams. It pads them and makes outrageous file sizes for burning.

I've discovered if you set your video settings to nonstandard specifications, but on the System tab in TMPGEnc select "MPEG-1 Video CD" (the setting for a standard VCD), VCDImager will not pad the stream. I dont know how this plays back in other machines, but it plays back in my Apex and JVC models alright. I also cannot say if that setting forces constant bitrate. I have not yet tried it with an stream encoded for MPEG-2, but maybe I will today.
