I am producing DVDs of hom movies (consumer DV)
I want to get as much onto each DVD as possible.
    I am using Mono Audio
What is the lowest audio bit rate that will give me decent sound for speech etc.
    Thanks

  2. I use 192 kbps. I have tried 128 and have found that I can tell a difference so I stayed with 192. Plus, you really don't save much space by going 128 over 192 so I figure why not .

  3. I moved a couple of old home VHS's. Used 1/2 D1 for video and 192bps Mono for the sound.
Sounded and looked as good as the original and was able to get around 4.5 hours onto one DVD.
I have used as low as 96bps Mono before with good results.
Just what is this reality thing anyway?

If I remember correctly, 64kbps is about the lowest that you can go. But why don't you experiment on your own and find out if the lower bit rates meet your quality expectations.

Mind you, this is just from my memory - I have never encoded that low. For about two hours of dual track mono, I use 196kbps and this yields a file size of about 175Mbytes. You might be able to cut this in half by only having a single mono track.
