I too have DC10 Plus. It really depends on what your source media is. I've noticed that it can really choke on old worn VHS tapes. Cable caps are great at max 640x480 6000KBytes/sec on a Duron 850 w/256 and 1 ata 100 5400rpm HD. Pinnacle software is pretty nice, it will automatically start a new file after 2 gig, auto scene detect for ease of editing, it's geared toward the home movie producer. I just did a 3/4 (edit: NOT 4 hour) hour cap 640x480@4000KBytes/sec with only one dropped frame, zero A/V sync problems. I'm sure a 1.5 hour cap would drop ~4 frames for me too.

pcjohn> Pinacle fixed the A/V sync issues in version 1.06 of the software. Markus Zinngg helped Pinacle write it. If you already have this newest version (November 2000), then the A/V syncs aren't DC10 related as the Pinacle software uses the same code as AVI_IO just conformed to the DC10's hardware specs. Here's that link from Pinnacle http://www.pinnaclesys.com/support/display.asp?FileID=577&ProductID=307

  2. Thanx ... sorry for the late reply, got jammed up. I don't mind tweaking since I work w/computers & I've had Studio 200 & 400 in the past so am familiar w/Pinnacle stuff. Can you elaborate on the AVI_IO & what it does? Is it a codec?

    TIA,
    Takosan

I have a DC10, and unfortunately there are a lot
of workarounds necessary. However currently I'm running
    a PIII w/384M and 2 ATA66 HD's. I just captured a 1.5 hr
movie at 640x480 with only 4 frame drops.

The downside is you MUST buy Markus Zingg's AVI_IO
for $25. It's a necessity for capturing and playback
(DC10 software generally has audio problems after
    3+ minute playback).

If you're on a budget and don't mind a few nights
tweaking your system, then you can't beat it for
    the price !

  3. Thanx. My source would be 2 hour Hi8 tapes via SVIDEO out of the camcorder.

It's not a capture sync issue, certain PC/Sound Card
configurations (something to do with the PCI bus) have a
problem with audio playback in the Studio software.
Basically, after playing a video after 2m 30s or so, the
audio starts to click, pop, whatever and gets progressively
worse. There are numerous posts about this in the Pinnacle
forums, and Pinnacle vaguely acknowledges the problem
    even exists.

AVI_IO solved the playback problems for me.
