Well it all depends on what your idea of expensive is... and where you live!
I'm in the UK and I get 4x speed 'Datawrite' discs for around £1 each on a spindle. They're pretty reliable (haven't had many write errors with them) and the only other brand which are (supposedly) better are 'Verbatim' but they are much more expensive at about £4 each!
Hope this helps,

Ritek 1x that burn at 2x are best for me (3rd gen discs). They are under a buck a piece and work at all DVD players I tested them with. Do you want 4x media or is 2x okay? Princo 2x is pretty good as well.

Red lion, need a bit more info:
What country are you in?
What burner do you have?
What speed disks do you need? -
country = uk
writer = sony dru500ax
speed 2x or 4x but not to important
tried datawrite yellow 1x and out of 25 maybe 18 worked before firmware update so dont no if this has improved it now or not
would like to try some other that is compatible with this drive -
I'm not sure which ones I would rate the highest, but Ritek media is generally recognized to be one of the best out there. However, I can tell you what media to stay away from.....Princo. I've bought both 1x and 4x, and had disastrous results with both. I'm now trying to find some sucker....err, I mean buyer, to take them off my hands.
Sometimes, ya just gotta.....umm, what's the word........FART??? -
Can't comment on the Sony, but my Pioneer 105 likes the datawrite reds. They've just dropped to 79p each too at www.blankdiscshop.co.uk
-
I also have a pioneer 105 and rarely have any trouble with the datawrite 4x (red). They are also available from www.bigpockets.co.uk for 78p each
Haven't tried these ritek ones yet, I'll have to give them a go sometime...
