Ok i know most dvd burners are locked at 2x for ripping dvd my sony dru500ax also
and i also know to go get a cheap liteon to rip but on another site or maybe this one someone said that it was because if you rip at more than 2x you will not get the same quality
how true is this
and also could sony or other drive makers make the drive rip at more if they wanted with a firmware update

I get rip speeds of up to 14x on my Pacific Digital DVD-Rom and never have any problems.

Simple Answer: Yes they could but they won't!
The Sony is rated at 8X and will run at that for Data...
However since no DVD drive needs to run more than 1 x to play video, same as a Audio Cd only runs at 1X when playing music, they have most likely done this to slow down copying of videos.
IMHO

I have 2 Pioneer DVD drives:
105-RW
105-ROM
The RW drive can rip 4x DVD-Rs at 4x but is limited to 2x for everything else.
I ran a firmware upgrade on the ROM drive and it now rips at up to 16x(average of about 6 or 7x)
Don't know about your drive but I hope this gives you further encouragement

I have a Samsung 616 DVD-ROM drive, Pioneer 105, and a TDK 440N. The only drive that limits my speed to only 2X is the Pioneer 105. The Samsung is what I normally use to rip will rip with speeds up to 15.5X, but averages about 6X-8X ripping. My TDK 440N DVD burner will rip at an average of 4X-5X

I have a Matshita DVD-ROM and a Memorex DVD+R/RW. When I had windows 98 I got speeds of about 2.2 with my matshita but got up to about 6-8x with the Memorex. However since installing Windows XP both of them seem to be locked at 2.2x.
Is there anyway round this cos now it takes 30-45 mins to rip a DVD compared to 15 mins pre XP. I know that people have said that some drives are locked at 2x but it wasn't locked at that speed before.
What locks the drive at 2.2x then is it XP or the drivers? -
to pablo180,

If not that should double your ripping speed !!

KillerbeeNL,
Don't want to sound like a complete muppet but how to you change the DMA settings in XP? I could change it in Win98 you just go to device manager and click properties and tick a box.
I have spent an hour or so looking through the device manager and the help thing and found nothing! Why is it so difficult?
Thanks. -
It's ok sorted it. It's not under the specific DVD-ROM anymore!
changed it but haven't tried ripping yet, hopefully it will work.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. -
To pablo180 en others....

So click on the IDE Channel 1 or 2 (depents where you DVDrom is connected to) and set from PIO to DMA...
